This is what #climatechange looks like in one of South Africa’s tourism hotspots. Sadly, so far 59 people lost their lives in these floods. Countless lost their homes and livelihoods. All the while, SA government wants to build more coal, gas and oil energy.
#ClimateActionNow
Together with @TheGreenConnect we protested outside the African Energy Indaba in Cape Town against the government's greenwashing of ‘natural’ gas as a ‘clean’ fuel. Gas = methane = powerful greenhouse gas. Renewables are the safest & cheapest energy source. #EnergyIndaba25

"The LIE that global north countries are saying that there is a shortage of public finance must be stopped now! The wealthy, the elites, the polluters, the profiteers must be held accountable."

We gave Sasol’s corporate video a spicy makeover! In this satire starring Siv Ngesi, Politically Aweh takes on Sasol’s failings in people, planet, and profit. Sasol's "triple bottom dec-line" isn’t impressing shareholders or the planet.

As African Energy Week discussions unfold, GC with the support of @Project90by2030 and @CtxRebellion rallied in Cape Town to demand that African governments halt investment in the oil and gas industry and end fossil fuel partnerships. #AEW2024#AfricanEnergyWeek
BREAKING: Activists are protesting as global and African energy elites meet for African Energy Week to shape Africa’s energy future.
Big Oil, your time of unchecked exploitation is coming to an end. The fight for justice is far from over.
WE WON'T BACK DOWN.

Who cares if we can’t grow enough food, it’s all about the profits! #AEW2024 where BigOil&Gas sells the story that "DrillBabyDrill" is not really the new colonialism, but about the ending energy poverty. Ignoring climate scientists & the climate shocks reducing crop yields.
Milton. Helene. Record temperature. Record CO2. @fema out of money. $20B /yr in Big Oil subsidies…
"Our only chance is to wake up the public to climate urgency. The faster we can join together and do this, the more we will save." -@climatehuman & friends
Climate change isn’t a tragedy, it’s a crime.
In the 1970s, Exxon scientists predicted global warming with “shocking accuracy,” but the company went on to spend millions lobbying against climate action.
Now we’re all paying the price.
🚫🔥 #AfricaEnergyWeek has become an annual spectacle where foreign fossil fuel interests dominate the agenda, exploiting Africa while mocking our energy poverty.
🔥 Enough is enough! 🔥

Vampire horror movie streaming at CTICC? Will oil executives discuss extracting more oil for profit, at any cost? We call on our leaders to shift away from fossil fuels and invest in sustainable practices for a just energy transition.

#StopAfricanEnergyWeek protests this morning in Johannesburg and in Cape Town.
Our demands are clear = Phase out #FossilFuels and embrace #RenewableEnergy ✊🏾
It is time Act for Africa and cancel African Energy Week.
#AfricaOilWeek is like a “vampire horror movie”. Having exhausted easily accessible sources of oil & gas in their own countries, they have come to bleed Africa dry. Oil and gas executives have flown in to sink their teeth into this continent. #AOW2024#EndFossilFuels

It is absolutely bizarre!
So here we have the DA minister of forestry, fisheries and the environment saying that “load shedding is still very much part of South Africa’s daily existence” and that he is satisfied that the Karpowership deal was still “needed and desirable”.
And on the other hand, we have the ANC minister of energy and electricity saying that the loadshedding crisis is something of the past, with no need to enter into expensive 20-year emergency procurements using imported powerships and imported fuel, and that the Karpowership deal is "off the table".
"The [Karpowership plan] has collapsed, they have lost their rights to the grid because they had three years to conclude the deal” and that the government could not create a “special dispensation for [Karpowership], otherwise you are going to open a can of worms because there are many others that lost [bids for the deal]”, he is further quoted as saying.
Talk about policy coherence!
