If you own a property with an onsite wastewater treatment system budget $500-$1000 a year for maintenance repair or upgrades prorated for the life of the system (35-45 years)

For comparison some sewer connections in Ontario cost $400 / year plus wastewater usage billed (hidden) in your water bill for an annual total of $1500 - ? With no other options if the rates go up (and they will)

Take home message - sewers are more expensive / house but septic system ownership isn't free either, just direct responsibility so you also have some discretion. Use it wisely.

Working in wastewater services presents an increased exposure risk to pathogenic infections including E.coli O157:H7 & Hep A.

Worker protection starts with awareness of biological safety hazards, exposure pathways, risk mitigation & responsibilities.

The primary sanitary function of onsite wastewater treatment is disinfection to prevent these pathogens from entering the drinking water supply.

This type of pathogenic contamination occurs when the system is not performing to design specifications including saturation of soils. Mixing septic tank effluent directly into the water table.

Take home message:
A septic system can function to dispose of sewage & not perform the basic function of protecting the water from pathogenic contamination.

Perc tests aren't typically used for septic system designs in Minnesota anymore, but they are used to evaluate sites for retention ponds. It's a tried and true method to determine how quickly water soaks into the soil.

Why are septic inspections important? Because they can be dangerous; the lid of this septic tank had cracked & and broken, making for a very dangerous situation. The owner didn't realize it was this way. This is at a small resort where curious kids could be playing.
