Update on the ongoing situation regarding Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala.

The national emergency coordination agency, CONRED, has elevated the alert status to orange following a significant escalation in volcanic activity.

The volcano is currently experiencing a highly explosive phase, characterized by lava fountains rising up to 300 metres, substantial ash columns, and pyroclastic flows descending the southeastern flanks.

In response to these developments, authorities have initiated preventive evacuations in high-risk communities, including El Porvenir and Las Lajitas. Additionally, National Route 14 (RN-14) has been closed to traffic, local school activities are suspended, and all climbing access to both Fuego and Acatenango is strictly prohibited.

For those currently located in or traveling near the Antigua and southern Guatemala regions, please ensure windows remain closed to mitigate ash inhalation and closely monitor official directives from CONRED.
