“Sultans of Swing” is the debut single from Dire Straits’ 1978 self-titled debut album. Written by Mark Knopfler, the rootsy rock classic introduced the band's distinctive sound, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, #8 on the UK Singles Chart, and the Top 10 in several other countries. Knopfler's clean, fingerpicked guitar style quickly became one of the most recognizable sounds in rock music.
The song was inspired by a real, modest jazz band performing in a nearly empty pub in Deptford, London. When the singer announced they were the "Sultans of Swing," Mark Knopfler found the contrast between the gritty pub setting and the grandiose name too good to ignore, inspiring an affectionate tribute to musicians who play purely for the love of music. Before becoming a global hit, the original demo was famously recorded for just £12.50, and after receiving airplay on BBC Radio London, it attracted the attention of several major record labels, eventually leading to the band's recording contract with Vertigo Records. Its guitar solo has since been frequently ranked among the greatest of all time, helping establish Dire Straits as one of the most influential guitar-driven bands of the late 1970s.
