@Andy_Olsen@JuliusGoat You should listen to Lead Belly’s song “Scottsboro Boys”. We’ve been using “woke” in is rightful context—at the very least—since the late ‘30s.
@JuliusGoat My dad 🧓🏾 was born in the early 40s. He said that some elders used the word woke when he was a kid. It’s AAVE & it’ll always be AAVE. What these reactionaries can’t ever understand is that the semantics of our words won’t magically change just because they co-opt our phrases. 🤷🏾♀️

Officials became convinced by the Food and Drug Administration’s findings and gave the agency the green light to make them public. https://t.co/tWSsTeHDkO
We're living through a Bowling for Columbine moment, where people are blaming technology for childhood declines in cognition & mental health
Few want to talk about the major culprit the past 6.5 years, cumulative SARS-CoV-2 reinfections & bereavement.
“A first-of-its-kind analysis by ProPublica found that the sepsis rate in second-trimester pregnancy loss hospitalizations increased by more than 50% after Texas’ near-total abortion ban went into effect in September 2021. The analysis also identified at least 120 in-hospital deaths of pregnant or postpartum women in 2022 and 2023 — an increase of dozens of deaths from a comparable period before the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Every time I do something on camera in an N95 hundreds of men start hurling abuse and ranting about masks. It’s very sad. I hope these ppl get treatment for their anxiety bc getting irrationally upset over seeing an immunocompromised person in a video is not a healthy way to live
I am very proud of a former intern of mine for writing this piece and calling me out where she disagrees. We need this new generation to renew moral purpose in our politics. https://t.co/tnOypV6JC7
Today we honor and celebrate #Juneteenth, a commemoration of June 19th, 1865 when an order was issued proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued). Today #Juneteenth signifies freedom, justice, and liberation.
The Juneteenth flag uses the colors red, white and blue of the American flag. Featured prominently in the center of the flag is a bursting star. Running through the center of the flag horizontally, is an arc that is meant to symbolize the new horizon of opportunity for Black people
In 2016, at age 89, Opal Lee—the "Grandmother of Juneteenth"—made a symbolic walk from Fort Worth to Washington, DC, to advocate for federal recognition of #Juneteenth. Later this year, she will celebrate her 100th birthday. More about her life and legacy: https://t.co/bCN4syZnBs
In recognition of #Juneteenth today, we’re sharing scans of General Order No. 3, the document that informed enslaved people in Texas that they were free on June 19, 1865, carrying out the Federal Government’s final execution of emancipation. 📜
Read the text in scans based on the original handwritten records preserved by the U.S. National Archives and saved to the Internet Archive ⤵️

For #Juneteenth: 70+ years after the Civil War, the WPA's Federal Writers' Project began interviewing elderly Americans who remembered being enslaved. These moving narratives & photos are now held here at the Library.

#OnThisDay in 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX to read Order No. 3, which affirmed the end of slavery in the states of the former Confederacy. This momentous occasion became known as #Juneteenth, a combination of “June” & “19th." More: https://t.co/bitoMm27sm
Apologies if this has already been pointed out but, last year, as predicted by patients, all three of the NIH RECOVER Initiative's large-scale brain retraining trials failed to improve cognition in #LongCovid patients. #MECFS

1. Remember that any attempt to paint Long Covid as psychogenic in nature deliberately and completely incorrectly biologically decouples SARS-CoV-2 infection from Long Covid. In essence, this rhetoric shifts the causative factor for LC from the virus to the patient's mind.
This is the type of crisis that a Democratic president would be held personally responsible for by the media. Instead it’s getting virtually no national attention despite the issue being directly connected to federal cuts enacted by the Trump administration
The federal district court found intentional racial discrimination. Produced a 78-page opinion. Heard 51 witnesses over 11 days.
The Supreme Court reversed it without finding those factual conclusions clearly erroneous - the legal standard that must be met to overturn a trial court's findings of fact.
The Court's own opinion invoked "our colorblind Constitution" while ignoring documented evidence that Alabama drew its maps with discriminatory intent. Justice Sotomayor in dissent: the record is crystal clear.
Rep. Shomari Figures won his seat under the court-ordered map. He may not have one to run in by November.
This is really stupid, and it’s not getting enough attention.
The Trump administration is pulling a working $368 million ocean monitoring system out of the water, equipment taxpayers already bought, built, and sank into the deep ocean.
And they are doing it right when the oceans are behaving in ways that alarm the scientists who study them.
Record-breaking temperatures.
A system of Atlantic currents that may be lurching toward collapse.
The response?
Yank out the instruments and walk away.
That is not budgeting. That is smashing the gauges while the engine is on fire and calling it efficiency.
For what? The Trump administration dressed it up as a “nimbler approach” and “smart lifecycle management,” which is fancy nonsense for “we shut it off and hoped nobody would ask why.” There is no return-on-investment analysis. They cannot show taxpayers save a dime, because the gear is already paid for and the science it produces protects real money and real lives.
The kicker: the same people killing the monitors want to mine the deep sea for minerals. So they are destroying the only tools that could measure what that mining does. That is not an accident.
That is the point. You cannot see the damage if you break the instruments first.
