This is a long post. We tried asking our founder to shorten it, but surgeons are not famous for brief explanations.

Still, it says what matters. Curium Life represented Indian surgical AI at BRICS 2026. Worth the long read, we promise. 🙂

At some point during those two days at the BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, I stopped and looked around. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hosting President Vladimir Putin, President Xi Jinping, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran. Brazil was represented by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Saudi Arabia by Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

And in the middle of this global gathering was @CuriumSurgical (Curium Life), a surgical AI startup Balu (Balachandran) Seetharam and I had started with a big idea and a great deal of uncertainty. We were one of 37 Indian deep-tech startups selected from the original Bharat Innovates cohort of 120 to showcase at the BRICS Bharat Innovates Exposition.

That was a very special feeling. Surgical AI, something we once struggled to explain to people, was being showcased alongside some of India’s finest work in space technology, semiconductors, quantum computing, robotics, biotechnology and clean energy.
It felt like surgical AI was finally being taken seriously.

The last 18 months have been a real shot in the arm for every startup that has been part of this cohort. It has been an incredible journey, and I am genuinely grateful.

I will also admit something honestly. When we started, I often looked at the government system as a hindrance. I regret thinking that way. The @EduMinOfIndia Ministry of Education, GOI has been one of our biggest cheerleaders. The recognition, access and opportunities to connect with capital have improved significantly. More importantly, we have felt that someone within the system genuinely wants us to succeed. A special thank you to Dr Praphullachandra Sharma IFS, who has been a bulwark of support throughout this journey.

I am also personally grateful to Dr @ShakeelAhemed of @EduMinOfIndia. He has always been incredibly responsive and has picked up the phone even for the most trivial of my requests. For a founder trying to find his way through a complicated journey, that kind of accessibility means more than people realise. Thank you to Union Education Minister Shri @JoshiPralhad and the entire @EduMinOfIndia team for believing that innovation coming out of Indian universities, hospitals and operating rooms deserves to be shown to the world.

There is still a great deal for us to build, validate and prove. But seeing @CuriumSurgical (Curium Life) represent Indian surgical innovation on the BRICS stage made me deeply proud.
From an idea inside an operating room to representing Indian deep tech before the world.
I am grateful. And we are only getting started.
