The 'milling' apparently only occurs with specific conditions. Often, the termites form a network of paths with an interesting spatiotemporal dynamic (speed-up video tracking showing the onset and progress)
And here is another trial, showing the opening that connects the nest and the circular arena. Again, this behaviour lasts only a few hours. After that the motion gradually stops and they return to their nest.
Excited to virtually present some of our recent findings about the ontogeny of social cognition in dogs in the Cognition & Learning 5 session at @AnimBehSociety! I’ll also be answering questions at the live Q + A on Fri 7/31 from 11-12 ET. #ABS2020
Following up with the thread…
Don't be mistaken: although collectively #inquiline#termites may be overall #peaceful, throughout #Evolution they never lost their soldier caste. These soldiers can inflict damage with powerful strikes, yet, they are a minority within the colony
As supporting information, we included this video showing how #inquiline#termites deal with their hosts’ aggression;
Instead of retaliation, they have developed some fascinating #behaviours that ultimately prevent #conflict escalation between the two #symbionts#SocialInsects
Did you know that in the termite Constrictotermes cyphergaster, whole colonies (including the royals) 'migrate' to tree branches, after reaching a certain nest size? An intriguing behaviour that needs to be further investigated. @IMPRS_OrgBio @CollectiveBehav#NotAnAntForGodsSake
