Activists plan march to State House office over Kizza Besigye’s disappearance in Nairobi

Security around Nairobi’s Central Business District is expected to increase on Monday, September 21, as activists prepare to march to the President’s Office on Harambee Avenue to demand answers over the reported abduction and transfer of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

The planned demonstration seeks to pressure the Kenyan government to explain what happened to Besigye after he reportedly disappeared from Nairobi in November 2024 before resurfacing in Uganda four days later. He was initially arraigned before a military court in Uganda, with his case later transferred to a civilian court.

The protesters are calling for Besigye’s release and an independent investigation into how he was moved from Kenya to Uganda.

They also want security officers who may have been involved in the operation to be investigated and held accountable if wrongdoing is established.

The planned march comes as fresh claims emerge during Besigye’s treason trial at the High Court in Kampala.

A prosecution witness has alleged that Kenyan police planted two pistols and fake currency inside an apartment in Nairobi before Besigye and his co-accused arrived.

According to the witness, the Riverside apartment had been prepared as part of an intelligence-led operation.

However, defence lawyers have questioned how the alleged weapons were handled and where they are currently held.

They have also raised concerns about whether forensic tests could have established whose fingerprints were found on the firearms.

The claims remain part of testimony presented in court and have not been established as factual findings.

Besigye is jointly charged with his aide Hajji Obeid Lutale and Uganda People’s Defence Force officer Captain Denis Oola over allegations of involvement in a plot to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government. All three have denied the charges.

Activists say Kenya must account for Besigye’s disappearance while he was on Kenyan soil.

They are demanding transparency from the government and an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his transfer.

Trump signs new Russia sanctions bill giving US fresh powers to target Moscow

US President Donald Trump has signed a new sanctions law aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine, giving his administration additional powers to target Moscow and countries that continue to buy Russian energy.

The measure was signed on Friday after receiving approval from Congress earlier in the week.

The legislation, known as the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, targets Russia’s energy and defence sectors, senior officials, banks and its so-called shadow fleet of tankers used to move oil while avoiding Western sanctions.

One of the key provisions gives Trump authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries that are among the biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas.

China and India, two major purchasers of Russian crude, could face the new measures, although the law does not automatically impose the tariffs. Their use will depend on decisions by the Trump administration.

The Republican-led House of Representatives passed the bill 262-159 on Wednesday, after the Senate approved it last month.

The legislation also targets foreign companies and individuals accused of supporting Russia's military or helping Moscow evade sanctions. It extends some existing sanctions against Iran as well.

The expanded tariff powers created divisions among Democrats. While many support stronger pressure on Russia, some lawmakers raised concerns about giving Trump broad authority over trade and the possible effects on the US economy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the legislation, saying stronger sanctions could support diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

He urged the United States and its allies to fully implement the measures.

China has warned that it could take steps to protect its national and economic interests, while India has said it will continue sourcing oil from different suppliers.

Trump's signing of the law comes shortly before a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding another international dimension to the new sanctions framework.
