On this day in 1840, Gaetano Donizetti's opera "La Fille du Regiment" premiered in Paris. On May 6, 1946 Curtis voice student Josephine Sitjar performed the aria "Chacun le sait" from that opera as part of her graduation recital.
A photograph, which came to Curtis with the Eleanor Sokoloff collection in 2020, has just been identified! It is none other than Curtis's founder Mary Louise Curtis about age 4. Text at the bottom indicates she gave this as a gift to her husband Edward Bok.
72 years ago on January 31, 1949, Curtis suffered a major fire. Interior damage was extensive, but thankfully the institute's collection of instruments and music were untouched. Here is the original Philadelphia Inquirer article, housed in the Curtis Archives
