Letβs take a deep breath and look at actual numbers together, because this narrative that SEVENTEEN was "saved from disbandment" requires a truly impressive detachment from reality.
Nobody was casually dropping 3 million sales in 2015 while "poor little SEVENTEEN was selling five albums." The physical market wasn't inflated yet.
Back then, EXO ruled physical sales with ~1.2M total, BTS was sitting around ~344K, and SEVENTEEN straight out of a notoriously broke company's green-taped basement clocked over 160,000 sales in their debut year.
Letβs track the official Gaon/Circle data step by step, nice and slow:
* 2015: Boys Be lands at #15 on the Gaon Year-End Album Chart (~122K copies). As a rookie.
* 2016: Going Seventeen hits #11 (~224K copies) and Love & Letter sits at #12 (~191K copies). Two albums practically gatekeeping the national Top 10 in year two.
* 2017: TEEN, AGE enters the Year-End Top 10 at #9 (~357K copies).
* 2018: You Make My Day holds down #8 (~390K copies).
* 2019: An Ode becomes the #2 best-selling album in all of South Korea (858K+ copies), with You Made My Dawn also sitting at #8 (475K+ copies). That is over 1.3 million Korean sales in a single year and an Album of the Year Daesang.
All of this happened before BigHit ever signed a contract with Pledis.
Now, about this imaginary "struggling group with zero live demand":
* Their 2019 HARU Tour in Japan pulled 175,250 people across 12 arena shows.
* The Ode to You tour brought in over 104,000 attendees in Japan and clocked 200,000+ globally, selling out KSPO Dome and international arenas.
* By late 2019, they had literally booked their first Tokyo Dome tour for May 2020 which was canceled by a global pandemic, not a lack of ticket buyers.
So letβs line up the timeline one more time:
* 2015: Monster rookie debut.
* 2017β2018: Consistent annual Top 10 seller.
* 2019: #2 biggest seller in Korea, Daesang winner, selling out 200k-capacity global arena tours.
* May 2020: BigHit acquires Pledis.
BigHit is a corporation, not an animal rescue shelter. In 2020, they were prepping for their massive IPO and desperately needed to fix their investor prospectus, which showed a glaring ~90% revenue dependence on one single group.
They didn't "save" Pledis out of pity; they bought out their biggest, most profitable independent rival to secure market dominance and impress Wall Street.
SEVENTEEN didn't become profitable because BigHit bought them. BigHit bought them because they were already printing money.
