Just had Murray the New Holland combine guru from Canada here. What a genius, giving us plenty of hints and settings to get better performance out of our machines. Many thanks to Chris and FAR for making this happen as the support has been invaluable. Keep up the great work FAR
@RichtraceC The things you do when the family are away.. shaping up well. still 8 weeks until we start on barley. Up to mother nature now. How are things over there?
Always looking for the low hanging fruit.... Variable rate nutrients and nitrogen is a game changer on our rolling clay country. Ticks so many boxes with profitability, sustainability, and environment. Close the gate and wait for harvest.... proof will be in the yield.
@timgortonz@farmerguy26 We are going to use deep N this year at the end of the season. This will help close the loop on N use efficiency. Then finally water testing to understand the big picture. Hopefully we are front footing the bureaucracy when they turn up with their clipboard.
@timgortonz@farmerguy26 I should add that other tools include PMN testing, FAR N calculator, yara hand held N tester, and Irix app. These all help us make better decisions.
@timgortonz@farmerguy26 On the nitrogen front I think we could drop 5 units per ton harvested on barley, maybe not as much on wheat. With regards to base nutrients we haven't saved a great deal but are putting them where they are required reducing losses and yield limitations.
@timgortonz@farmerguy26 Using ATFarm via satellite for N. Has its limitations but very cheap. Grid sampling for base nutrients using Agronomy Solutions. Both working exceptionally well here. No need for EM mapping yet as we are dry land farming.
@farmerguy26 Honestly, I think drones and AI will be the real game changer as they will be making half the decisions for us... all we will be doing is ground truthing the outcomes.
First day of #wheat23 harvest! Lots to do; wheat harvest, second cut alfalfa, bailing straw, tillage, and planting cover crop. Oh and I still have a βday jobβ to keep up with π€·π»ββοΈ #OntAg
Update on the companion crop triticale/clover. Did 14ton/ha dry matter 3 wks ago. 1 ton less than traditional method. No rain since and very dry but Persian Clover is coming away as another cover crop. Plan to put into autumn barley I think...
Companion triticale/clover for whole crop coming along nicely. Lower N input, better protein for livestock... shame about the thistles, groundswell and mayweed. 1 yr of seeding is 10 yrs weeding... wish farming was as easy as the media make it sound....
Companion cropping update. Triticale/clover vs traditional. same N applied at same timings to date. Recommendation from N tester for trit/clover 20 units less than traditional. Not sure how much it adds.... less deseas and more weeds at this point.... Yield will be interesting
