In 1977, Teresita Basa was m*rdered in her Chicago apartment. Six months later, a dead woman possessed a stranger's body, named the k*ller, and the conviction held.

On the night of 21 February 1977, firefighters responded to a blaze in a Chicago apartment building.

They found the mortally wounded body of Teresita Basa, a 48-year-old respiratory therapist from the Philippines, st*bbed through the chest with a kitchen knife and set on fire beneath a burning mattress.

She had been posed to look like a se*ual assault victim, but the autopsy confirmed she had not been assaulted. No motive. No suspects. No leads.

For six months, the case went nowhere.

Then in August 1977, a doctor named Jose Chua contacted Chicago detective Joe Stachula with a story unlike anything the detective had ever heard.

His wife Remy, a fellow respiratory therapist who had briefly worked with Basa, had begun falling into trance-like states and speaking in a voice that was not her own.

It was a voice that spoke in Tagalog with a Spanish accent Remy didn't normally have, and identified itself as Teresita Basa.

The voice pleaded: "Doctor, I would like to ask for your help. The man who m*rdered me is still at large."

When pressed for her name, it answered: "I am Teresita Basa."

She told them she had nothing to be scared of, and named her ki*ler: Allan Showery, a respiratory therapist who worked at the same hospital.

The voice also said that Showery had stolen her jewellery and given it to his girlfriend. Detectives investigated.

Many of the details turned out to be true. The jewellery was found. Showery was arrested, tried, and convicted of m*rder.

Nobody has ever explained how Remy Chua knew what she knew.

She and Teresita Basa had barely worked together. The details she provided, the k*ller's name, the stolen jewellery, where it had gone, were verified.
