A game that feels like a surreal mix between The Matrix and Doom, with a dash of A Clockwork Orange craziness and a pinch of LSD. Not sure if that does it justice but I feel that's a pretty fair and accurate description of MDK (1997), a cult classic shooter developed by Shiny Entertainment.

You're a janitor on a spaceship (no, you're not Roger Wilco), recruited by the eccentric scientist Dr. Fluke Hawkins to stop an alien invasion.

Massive alien “Minecrawlers” are ravaging Earth, flattening cities and harvesting resources. That's where you come in to stop the whole thing.

I think, it's safe to say the developers weren't exactly going for mainstream appeal. MDK is a mix between classic action shooting, sniping, platforming, and quirky/odd humor.

It was an ambitious project for its time, featuring inventive gameplay and a truly great soundtrack. Critics loved it and players bought it, making MDK a massive commercial success.

Early 90s games were freaking awesome. Why, you ask?

Well, when the head research scientist looks like Sean Connery's brother, you know you're in for an epic game. And C3PO's cousin reading the Galactic News? Hell yeah!

Master of Orion (1993, Simtex) is easily among my most played games ever. Just like other greats of that era (Civilization, Master of Magic, etc.), it allowed you more or less complete freedom, making every game unique. Mass production? Tech superiority? Aggression? Diplomacy? An early version of a sandbox game.

Legends like Sid Meier, Peter Molyneux, Will Wright, Geoff Crammond, etc. are often mentioned when it comes to the old days. Steve Barcia deserves a spot among them if you ask me.
