CYBER SECURITY TIPS/AWARENESS
Day 30 of 30: Cybersecurity is an ongoing effort. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and always prioritize the safety of your digital life. Together, we can create a safer online environment. #CyberAwareness#StaySafeOnline
Dear Cyber Security Wannabe, Here are the Top 5 Things you Need to do to Break into Cyber Security.
Learning = Job Security
1. Choose a Path - Yes, saying you want to get into cyber security is like saying you want to play sports. You need to pick a sport. Offensive Security, Defensive Security, and GRC are 3 routes in. These aren't the only routes, they are great choices.
2. Develop a Skillset - If you choose Offense, you need to become pretty technical. Understand systems, networking, and learn tools like Nmap, Nessus, Metasploit, Burp, and other industry standard tools.
If you choose Defense, understand TCP/IP. Learn how network packets flow, learn to use tools like Wireshark. Learn SIEMS to be able to detect, analyze, and respond to security threats.
If you choose GRC, start learning frameworks. No, you don't have to be super technical for GRC, but the more you learn, the more it will help. Learn frameworks such as the NIST CSF, PCI DSS, and so on. Learn to help companies close the gaps in their security posture by being able to explain controls to them in a language they can understand.
3. Take Classes - You get to choose what is right for you. It doesn't matter if you are taking free online classes, a Bootcamp, technical school, or college. No one cares how you gained your knowledge. They only care that you know it. Dive in deep and absorb as much knowledge as you can.
4. Get Certified - Although this isn't required to get into the field of Cyber Security, it certainly helps. If you are trying to break into this field and want some base knowledge, go for the Security +. If you are looking to be a Pentester, look at the CEH and eventually your OSCP. If you are looking at defensive security, maybe start with your CySA+ cert.
5. Stand Out - I can tell you that all the knowledge in the world and 20 different certifications won't help you unless you make connections and stand out. Use platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter to get yourself discovered. You have a much high chance of landing a job if you are discovered by a recruiters instead of spraying resumes everywhere.
If you want to work from home in your pajamas, doing these 5 steps above will play a huge part in getting you there.
Pick a sport, and be great at it.
