Wagner PMC has turned into a drug cartel after Prigozhin’s death

The new Wagner fighters have firmly established themselves in the Central African Republic, where no one can reach them. According to The Wall Street Journal, their base is located near the upper reaches of the Ubangi River.

Their main source of income has become the trade in tramadol — a powerful painkiller that is used in large doses as a cheap stimulant.

In addition, the mercenaries control gold mining and other resources in the CAR — one of the poorest and most unstable countries in the world.

Analysts estimate that illegal gold trading could bring Wagner fighters around $180 million a year.

After Prigozhin’s death, the Kremlin took control of many of the group’s operations, but in the Central African Republic this proved more difficult. Hundreds of former Wagner fighters retained their influence and became integrated into local security structures.
