There used to be a man who repaired shoes beside the old bank building near my bus stop. Small wooden stand. Rusted umbrella. Radio always playing lowlife music from the 80s.
Everyone called him Baba Tunde.
He barely spoke, but he noticed everything.
The first time I went to him, one sole of my shoe had opened halfway. I was embarrassed because the shoe was expensive but already falling apart. He looked at it, shook his head softly, and said, “You walk too fast for weak shoes.”
After that day, anytime he saw me from across the road, he’d already bring out polish before I even sat down. Tighten stitches. Clean the edges. Sometimes he’d refuse payment and just say, “Next time.”
I didn’t realize when it became routine.
Monday mornings, he’d tap my shoe and say, “Big week ahead.” Fridays, he’d smile and ask, “You survived?”
One rainy season in 2021, he stopped showing up.
At first, I assumed maybe the weather was bad. Then one week passed. Then two. Someone else took over the spot with a phone accessories table. Life moved on the way Lagos always does fast, indifferent.
I started buying new shoes more often, but none of them lasted the way the old ones used to.
Months later, I was scrolling online and saw a short video posted by a girl fundraising for her father. She said he used to fix shoes on Broad Street before diabetes affected his legs and he couldn’t work anymore.
The background looked familiar.
The umbrella. The wooden stool. The radio.
I messaged immediately.
She replied within minutes.
We spoke that evening. She handed him the phone.
His voice sounded weaker, but the humor was still there.
First thing he asked me was, “You still walking too fast?”
I visited him the next weekend. Small apartment. Shoes neatly arranged near the wall like old memories he couldn’t throw away.
He insisted on polishing the pair I wore, even while sitting down.
Said a craftsman never truly retires.
Before I left, he told me something I didn’t know I needed to hear:
“Some people repair shoes. Some people just help you keep moving.”
It struck me then , there are people who quietly maintain pieces of your life… until their absence teaches you how much they were holding together.

>American airman asleep on a train in France while on vacation with his childhood friends
>Wakes up to the sound of screaming and breaking glass
>Sees a terrorist step into the aisle carrying an AK-47 and 300 rounds of ammo
>Doesn't look for an exit, doesn't hesitate
>Sprints 30 feet down the aisle straight at the barrel of the gun, completely unarmed
>The terrorist pulls the trigger; the rifle miraculously jams
>Tackles him, gets slashed in the neck and hand with a box cutter, almost losing his thumb
>Ignores the bleeding, chokes the attacker unconscious with his bare hands
>Credits God for the jammed rifle and his survival
>Saves everyone on board

I stepped outside and challenged myself to stare at the sun. Honestly, I couldn’t do it, it was too bright. I couldn’t even keep my eyes fully open. It was just too bright!
Then a thought hit my heart:
“If the sun is this bright, and it’s millions of miles away, how bright is the One who created it?”
At that point I just humbled myself immediately. Because clearly, if I can’t handle the sun, how do I want to handle God? No wonder the Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:16 that God dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. It makes perfect sense now!
And then you remember Moses, after just a partial encounter with God’s glory, his face shone so brightly for days. The Israelites were like, “Sir… please cover that thing.” 😭 He literally had to wear a veil because the brightness was too much for them.
So imagine the full glory of God… ah! No human being can stand that. Not even for one second.
That’s why it’s so deep that God chose to come in a way we could handle. He didn’t show up in full blazing glory; instead, He came in human form through Jesus, so we could actually look at Him, talk to Him, and relate with Him without fainting on the spot.
Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God, the version of God our eyes can handle without going blind.
Honestly… what a marvelous, wise, and loving God. 🙌
Spiritual warfare 101 - No matter how overwhelmed you “feel” inside, never show the devil. You see, the devil is NOT Omniscient, so he does not know all things. The things he knows about us are things said and spoken of us. Or the things we let out from our mouths ourselves or by our reactions and actions. So while you may be overwhelmed in your soul, the way he gets to know is from your reaction. And because he is a wicked and oppressive entity, when he knows where it hurts, he robs it in the more.
But responding in praise confounds him. This is exactly the rationale behind the idea that praise confuses the enemy. Because he can’t understand why his onslaught is not causing you to give up and give in.
So beloved saints of God, regardless how you feel right now, find a way to release your praise !
“14 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.”
Psalm 71:14.
You are BLESSED 🙂

The actual numbers are probably worse. The data was probably gathered from people that respond to surveys.
People that respond to surveys aren't the poorest of the poor.
