Using closed-loop optogenetics, we could reduce fear expression via the emission of dFONs. Beyond standard optogenetics, this experiment demonstrates our system’s ability to mediate behavioral manipulation and be part of a comprehensive, functional neurostimulation toolbox.
We injected dFONs into the prefrontal cortex of mice expressing the red-sensitive Chrimson opsin in interneurons. UV light, in presence of dFONs, led to the activation of these regulatory neurons through reabsorption of dFONs fluorescence, silencing neuronal activity around.
The core-shell structure of the dFONs enables energy transfer from the shell to the red-emitting core, enhancing its brightness. In water, it even surpasses that of fluorescent dyes or proteins, and competes with the brightest nanoparticles like Quantum Dots and polymers.
We prepared bicomponent dye-based Fluorescent Organic Nanoparticles, dFONs, using the nanoprecipitation technique. This strategy can be applied to a great variety of dyes, allowing the creation of water-dispersible fluorescent nanoparticles.
Previous work has allowed non-invasive deep brain optogenetics (e.g. https://t.co/ZvjpGjuWw0 ), but we want to move from inorganic rare earths to organic, biocompatible nanoparticles 🧠⚗️
That’s a wrap! Our work continues to develop novel forms of these promising upconversion nanoparticles 🌈! Thanks to all the authors and to @Neuro_Bordeaux & @AgenceRecherche for their financial support.
We are thrilled to share our freshly published work, on the development of nanoparticles for next gen optogenetics, in collaboration with @ISM_Bordeaux & @iins_bordeaux ! These results set track for innovative and flexible light-based cell stimulation applied to fear control. 👇
🧠🇦🇹 The @CyrilHerrylab is at #FENS2024! Our latest science will be showcased 👇 We are also looking for new talented lab members : please DM or come meet us in Vienna. See you soon!

Axo-axonic or Chandelier cells are among the most mysterious neurons of the brain! We explored their implication in disease. TL:DR, a quick summary below
Great presentation of Ana Menegolla @AnaPMenegolla in the @NCMagendie symposium, showing the project in which we have been collaborating for the last couple of years. @CyrilHerrylab
This morning at the @NCMagendie we were pleased to have Cyril Herry introducing our team and Julien Courtin showing some of our latest research. Great opportunity for interactions and collaborations within our institute's amazing scientific community!
