Tommy is a particularly tragic character in this timeline, because you can see just how fucked up he is. Like I’ve said a million times before this trilogy is amazing in the way it tells its story, and Tommy is no different for me.

Tommy was just a child when Michael first came home, he was already small and easily scared, bullied too. Outside Laurie we never really see any support for these issues, Laurie is who he goes to, to seek reassurance. His babysitter is the person he goes to, to know the dark corners of his room are safe, that the boogeyman isn’t coming for him like Little Lonnie Elam says he is. She reinforces a safer world view, a rational one. The kind that a child needs to hear about to overcome the kinds of things that make us jump at night. The fear that the tree branch on the window isn’t a monster, the reassurance that nothing is in the closet or heaven forbid under the bed.

Laurie is seemingly the only person who does this for Tommy. She babysits him often, walks him to school when she can, and takes a genuine interest in ensuring he feels safe.

But she’s wrong.

The boogeyman DOES exist, and he comes after Laurie and by proxy, he comes after Tommy. He murders Annie Bracket (and could’ve killed Lindsey Wallace had she not came to his house). He Kills Lynda and Bob too, and he tries to kill Laurie. Tommy hears as Laurie, the woman who makes him feel safe and reassured screams at the top of her lungs in terror and panic slamming on the door, in need of HIS help now. Even when Laurie fights back, Tommy can’t believe the safety has actually returned. He says “You can’t kill the boogeyman” and he’s right, Michael comes into his view and once again there’s nothing but terror. The night ends with Michael apprehended, but only after so much security has already been taken from Tommy.

The aftermath solidifies his trajectory, the woman he looks to for guidance goes into a spiral, her trauma response is to bury herself into preparation and to fortify herself behind an armor she creates. She says the evil will come back, and to Tommy…this is the only thing that makes sense anymore. Because it’s exactly what he believes and hearing it from the person he trusts in most, only amplifies that belief.

He tried to listen to her when he was little, tried to believe the boogeyman WASNT coming, but he did. So when in Halloween Kills, Tommy says “the boogeyman is coming for me” before he even knows Michael has escaped again. It’s the age old story….once again Little Tommy Doyle is right, to his own detriment.

The moment Tommy finds out Michael is loose, you can see it on his face. The gears of fear had never stopped turning, but they had slowed. Now they were twisting rapidly. The whole night he returns to the same obsessive line of thought he had in 1978, only this time the boogeyman has another name. The most heart breaking moment for me personally is when he finally sees Laurie, and like a child he promises to keep her safe. The way she made him feel safe all those years ago. He views it as his now his job. He’s all grown up and wants to protect the person that always took care of him. It’s sweet and unfortunately a line of thought only reinforced by Laurie and her tunnel vision goal of killing Michael. Both Tommy and Laurie could’ve had different lives, it’s so sad to think this is how both of them ended up. But even in this sad way, they still care for one another.

But when all is said and done, the tragedy is. Tommy Doyle died as he lived….afraid of The Boogeyman.

And that breaks my heart.
