This woman was Marion Stokes, a librarian and activist who used her early Apple stock wealth to run VCRs 24/7 from 1979 until her death in 2012.
She amassed 71,000+ tapes to stop networks from altering the past. Today, the Internet Archive is digitizing it all.
Only opposing localization changes when it's the type that pushes political agendas misses the forest for the trees. Old localizations aren't any better just because they're "funny" or "based," they're actually what helped pave the way for the loose style of localization that is rife throughout the industry.
Localizers changing the scripts is *the* problem, it doesn't matter what label one attributes to the content or if it provides giggles, the issue is that it overwrites the creator's words/intent with nonsense rather than providing a faithful translation of the original Japanese script.
The idea that rewrites are okay because they fit a specific preference is the entire problem with the industry & really demonstrates a lack of solid principles; this attitude is ultimately no different than the localizers of today. Personal preferences should never justify rewriting someone else's story.
The core issue is a general lack of respect for the original script; that is the root of the problem. If the industry standard was providing an English translation that adheres to the original Japanese version, all of the problems would be solved.
The purpose of opposing modern localization should be to advocate for faithful translations, not just a different flavor of being incorrect. Translations should be nothing less than faithful, anything else is just vandalism.
(And no, it doesn't matter what the audio here says because there's nothing a localizer could write that would make it alright.)
