He's saying that if American Jews tie their identity to Israel and their actions, people are going to take their grievances with Israel's horrific actions out on American Jews.

And he's saying it's a bad thing.

I haven’t changed. I believe in liberalism, human dignity, and democracy more firmly than I ever have before.

I oppose powerful special interest groups like AIPAC because their influence distorts our democracy. AIPAC has poured money into MAGA insurrectionists and far-right politicians when doing so advanced its goal of unlimited American support for the extremely illiberal policies of Israel.

I oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank because I believe in human dignity, sovereignty, and basic human rights … not because I’ve suddenly abandoned liberalism and become a Marxist.

I believe in markets, equality, democracy, individual liberty, and strong liberal institutions. And because I believe in those things, I oppose human rights abuses and attempts to undermine democratic institutions … regardless of who commits them.
