EMS is not an essential service under state law. I’m filing a bill to change that and start building a sustainable funding solution.

VIEWPOINT | Neglecting child care, early learning more costly for South Dakota taxpayers
Guest column by Sen. Tim Reed

Yesterday I spoke on the Senate floor in support of funding a new state prison. Now the work begins to build a modern facility that keeps staff and inmates safe and provides opportunities to reduce recidivism and strengthen public safety across South Dakota.
South Dakota recorded the second-lowest drug overdose death rate in the nation last year. A big part of that success is due to the expanded availability of Narcan, a life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses.
I was proud to support legislation that made Narcan available to the public without a prescription and ensured that those who administer it in good faith are protected from legal liability. Equipping our law enforcement officers with Narcan and making it more accessible to families has saved lives.
This is making a real difference in saving South Dakotans.
Honored to serve on SD’s America’s 250th Celebration Commission. I’ve proposed opening the 2026 legislative session with a joint reading of the Declaration of Independence by a Thomas Jefferson impersonator.

Brookings just became a news desert.
The sudden closure of the Brookings Register isn’t just about losing headlines—it’s about losing a key safeguard for democracy.
South Dakota's EMS system is under pressure. At our 2nd EMS Interim Committee mtg, we heard how staffing gaps, financial strain & lack of clarity on nurses’ roles are threatening rural response. https://t.co/8QKCk6SR4Y
Proud to prime sponsor SB 74, highlighted by @DakotaScoutNews, requiring annual review of open meetings laws. Also carried HB 1059 in the Senate. Great teamwork with Rep. Mary Fitzgerald! @mjfitzyy

South Dakota’s EMS system is under pressure—and the Legislature is working to respond. As co-chair of the EMS Interim Committee, I’m committed to finding real, sustainable solutions. Our rural communities depend on it https://t.co/R8dpzq9RW8
Proud to have been the prime sponsor of the bill ensuring South Dakota’s rape kits are properly funded. Grateful to @TaylorRehfeldt for carrying it in the House. There’s more work ahead to strengthen the entire forensic exam process. https://t.co/qdIcmaXY9i
Today Rep. Heermann and I presented a legislative commemoration to Brookings Fire Chief Pete Bolzer, honoring his 45+ years of service. Pete’s leadership and dedication have made a lasting impact on our community. Congratulations on your retirement, Chief!
Good to see Matt and Kayla Klein and SD State Senator Tim Reed. We discussed the importance of extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which would keep the increased child tax credit intact and save South Dakotans from a tax hike of over $2,400 next year.
Proud to be the prime sponsor of SB 171, now signed into law by @GovLarryRhoden This adds questions to the seller’s disclosure form about whether a home is in a designated historical district or is a historic property—info buyers deserve to know.
I voted NO on HB 1169 and support @GovLarryRhoden’s veto. The bill would’ve added new barriers to citizen-led amendments and measures—and it’s likely unconstitutional. https://t.co/1ucXfKL1DO
Don’t believe the attack ads. The 340B program is a lifeline for rural healthcare.
Sen. Tim Reed’s SB 154 ensures savings stay local to support hospitals, pharmacies & patients—not pharma profits. https://t.co/YPFntUl4hN
South Dakota State upsets Oklahoma State 74-68
