Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, assumed responsibilities as the new Secretary General of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation, today. The change was effected in a formal handing over ceremony held at the #D8 Secretariat in Istanbul.

During the ceremony, the Outgoing Secretary-General, Ambassador Isiaka Abdulqadir Imam, and the Incoming Secretary-General, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, exchanged remarks - stressing the D-8’s vast potential, ensuring realisation of the opportunities for enhanced cooperation and economic integration, and underscoring commitment to the principles and objectives of the Organisation as enshrined in the #D8 Charter as well as the Decennial Roadmap.

The ceremony concluded with the signing of the handover minutes and a family photo.

Honoured to be received by H.E. Foreign Minister Dr. Seyed Abbas Araghchi (@araghchi) for a bilateral meeting during my visit to Tehran. I reiterated our condolences, reaffirmed solidarity with the people of Iran, and wished success for the Iranian leadership’s efforts for durable peace, progress and prosperity. I also apprised him of recent progress on various tracks of cooperation within the D-8 framework and highlighted the D-8’s present profile and future trajectory.

Foreign Minister Araghchi graciously thanked for my participation in the ‘Farewell and Tribute Ceremony’; underlined Iran’s strong national resolve as well as commitment for peace through dialogue and diplomacy; and emphasised the importance of enhanced economic cooperation in the transformed regional landscape. FM Araghchi also reaffirmed Iran’s steadfast commitment to D-8 as a founding member and assured that Iran would continue to contribute substantially to the advancement of D-8 agenda of cooperation across the broad spectrum. We exchanged views on ways to realise new opportunities for increased trade, investment, energy cooperation, and hard and soft connectivity, arising from the transformation underway.

During the visit, I also had substantive interactions with H.E. Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Saeed Khatibzadeh and D-8 Commissioner Ambassador Alireza Tootoonchian. Our exchanges focused on enhancing policy dialogue, deepening D-8 collaboration in priority areas under the Decennial Roadmap 2020-2030, and measures to strengthen #D8’s institutional capacity, organisational effectiveness, and international profile and visibility.

Visited Tehran to attend the Official ‘Farewell and Tribute Ceremony’ organised for foreign dignitaries to honour the memory of the Supreme Leader, His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

On this solemn occasion, I paid our final respects and conveyed profound condolences to the bereaved family as well as the leadership, Government, and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

May His Eminence’s noble soul rest in eternal peace and may the people of Iran find abiding solace and strength and enduring peace. Ameen!

Attended the Ministerial Conference in Istanbul, today, on “Protecting Health in Earthquakes” — jointly organised by the World Health Organization (@WHO) and 🇹🇷Ministry of Health (@saglikbakanligi ).

The Conference brought together Ministers, Senior Officials, practitioners, academics, international partners, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen resilience and enhance global cooperation in earthquake emergency management.

On the sidelines, I had valuable interactions with the Ministers of Health of Türkiye and Indonesia, H.E. Prof. Dr. Kemal Memişoğlu; and H.E. Budi Gunadi Sadikin. We talked about measures for further deepening D-8 collaboration in the health sector and strengthening partnerships in this priority area on the Organization’s agenda.

Health security is a collective responsibility. The D-8 remains committed to promoting stronger cooperation, resilient health systems, and effective emergency preparedness to safeguard our communities against future disasters.

In an era defined by complex, multifaceted challenges and constantly evolving global landscapes, nations need the best minds at the table, and across the D-8 Member States, women are contributing with distinction to diplomacy and public service through their leadership. From heading critical missions to driving intense multilateral negotiations, women in D-8 countries have increasingly assumed prominent roles in foreign policy, multilateral fora, and international engagement -- bringing diverse perspectives and fostering more inclusive approaches to global problem-solving. Their achievements not only reflect national progress but also illustrate a broader transformation toward more representative and effective diplomacy.

This Day calls upon us to further support and empower women in diplomacy by ensuring equal opportunities, strengthening institutional frameworks, and promoting environments where their voices are fully heard and valued. With TİKA, our exchanges focused on strengthening development cooperation and exploring avenues for capacity-building, digital transformation, and joint initiatives that advance sustainable development across D-8 Member States.

With KOSGEB, we discussed ways of empowering SMEs through innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, AI, financing mechanisms, and stronger business ecosystems.

Valuable contributions by all the distinguished Commissioners and Heads Delegations ensured productive outcomes of the meeting.

The Commission Session coincided with the commemoration of the 29th Anniversary of D-8 on 15 June, bringing together D-8 Member States, ambassadors, representatives of international organizations, and senior officials from Türkiye in a renewed spirit of solidarity, partnership, and shared purpose.

Toplam nüfusu 1,2 milyar’a, ekonomik büyüklüğü 5 trilyon Dolara ulaşan D8 Teşkilatı üyeleri arasındaki iş birliklerinin gerçek potansiyeline ulaşması için her türlü katkıyı vermeye hazır olduğumuzu ifade ederek çalışmalarında başarılar diledik.
