With an average of 5-6% annual returns and the associated face value that comes with a life insurance contract, there's a reason the wealthy use these policies as a part of their financial planning.
What's a participating whole life policy?
A participating whole life policy is permanent insurance that offers guaranteed cash value growth and the potential to share in the carrier's profits through dividend distributions.
Take Mass Mutual for example, they have just completed their 158th consecutive year of paying dividends with a record payout of $2.9 billion to policyholders.

No-exam Life Insurance: What’s it all about?
Who doesn’t want a streamlined process that reduces time? No medical exam and a limited number of health questions to answer means that you could be covered in as little as a few days and in some cases, almost instantly.
Why would anyone go the traditional application route when this type of policy exists? That’s what we’re breaking down today and why it may or may not be the best option for you.
First, let’s talk about the benefits of applying for a no-exam life insurance policy:
The first and most obvious is the time and convenience factors. You don’t have to schedule a physical exam which means that you won’t have to go through a blood drawing, provide urine samples, or have someone take measurements. The time it takes to complete an application is drastically reduced compared to traditional applications. The time it takes to issue the policy is also reduced significantly.
The second benefit that some applicants find ideal is the privacy factor. A less invasive application could make applicants feel more at ease during the process.
The final main benefit is access and pricing. For healthy applicants who have good driving records, good credit, and no criminal records, the premiums can be competitive to traditional applications. These policies may also provide options for someone who is harder-to-insure traditionally, though the pricing will match the risk.
Sounds great so far, doesn’t it? Let’s dive into the downsides of going this route over a traditional one:
While a young and healthy applicant could receive competitive rates on a no-exam application, they’re still not going to get the best price due to the limited underwriting. Face values (death benefit) will also be limited for simplified issue policies. Usually, you’ll see a maximum of $300-$500k that you can apply for and that cap is going to be based on age restrictions most of the time. For anyone who is dealing with or has dealt with health issues, legal issues, or credit issues, the premiums will be dramatically higher than a traditional application.
Graded benefits and waiting periods also come into consideration. These are common with guaranteed issue life insurance policies. They can reduce or eliminate the face value during the initial period of a policy and for some cases, that could be up to two years. If someone with a two-year waiting period dies during that period, the death benefit will not pay out, and the beneficiaries will only receive the amount that was paid in premiums while the policy was in-force.
Other considerations that need to be accounted for are claim complications due to misrepresentation on the application, exclusion of living benefits on some policies, and limited conversion rights, if the policy has them at all.
No-exam insurance policies provide an easier and quicker way to get something in place, but options are limited in more ways than one.
Some insurance carriers will approve traditional applications without the need to complete a physical examination. Speaking with an experienced insurance agent that knows these programs and carriers is ideal because they can guide you to the right product based on your needs and wants, answer your questions, and assist you throughout the entire process.
The great thing about using an experienced insurance agent is that it doesn’t cost you anything. The insurance rates that you receive will be the same whether you applied online alone or if you relied on the expertise of a professional.
Near retirement and someone's pitching a variable-rate IUL? Run. The pitch, upside with protected downside and tax-free growth, buries a real cost: when the insurer has bad years, fees and caps gut your cash value, and the policy can collapse right when you need it.
