We in Nyanza have become too comfortable using “marginalisation” to explain our situation, even under devolution. At some point, we have to confront an uncomfortable truth: part of the problem is not just what we receive, but what happens to the resources allocated to us.

Money allocated for development by both the national and county governments is often lost through corruption, with the beneficiaries being the very leaders we repeatedly elect. Then, every five years, some of these leaders return with familiar narratives, small handouts and ethnic politics, and we reward them with another term.

The result? Poor roads, inadequate schools, limited electricity and, in many parts of Nyanza, people still huwa tunategemea maji ya mtoni, no piped water juu "hakuna pesa"

The “Wakikuyu wako na barabara, wako na maji…” narrative is repeatedly weaponised during elections to convince us that our problems are caused by other communities rather than by failures of leadership and accountability.

For years, our "leaders" could hide behind political loyalty and ethnic mobilisation. A simple “xyz tosha” from Raila ni ivo tunarudisha a bad leader juu we had "political loyalty" to him.

Devolution was supposed to bring resources and decision-making closer to the people. If we still cannot point to tangible improvements in our communities, we need to ask difficult questions, pesa imeishia kwa few families

Until we demand accountability, scrutinise how public money is spent and refuse to re-elect leaders who have failed us, we will keep repeating the same cycle.

We cannot demand better leadership while rewarding poor leadership every five years. At some point, we have to take responsibility for the choices we make at the ballot.

Otherwise, Nyanza will remain Yemen forever.💀
