Famed soprano Martina Arroyo has died. She was 90.
With her luminous voice and ease on stage, the Harlem native broke barriers as one of the first major Black opera stars in the 1960s and 1970s.
She was also familiar to the nation's TV viewers at the time as a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show."
In 2013, she was honored by the Kennedy Center, just one of her many awards.
Arroyo announced her retirement in 1989 and devoted herself to teaching.
Happy 100th birthday to Opal Lee, aka the “Grandmother of Juneteenth!” At 89, she began her historic walk to help make Juneteenth a federal holiday, and she’s STILL advocating for the preservation of our history! Queen, your century of perseverance and service shows us the power of never giving up! 🎂
