According to Central Government data released today, India ranks first in dry onion production worldwide, contributing nearly 25% of total output. Most of this production comes from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
After the recent US–India trade deal, USA Maize DDGS is again in discussion for India. As per end users, at ₹28/kg it is not suitable for premium poultry feed due to lower amino acids & higher fibre vs soya. It works in average feed. If soya goes above ₹50–52/kg, DDGS is viable
As per USDA data, India’s maize consumption increased from 3 crore tons to 4.4 crore tons, a rise of 46% over the four-year period from 2021/22 to 2025/26. Ethanol demand has remained a crucial factor behind this sharp increase.
India’s onion production has increased from 232.6 lakh tons in 2017–18 to 307.8 lakh tons in 2024–25, showing a growth of 32%. But during the same period, per-hectare productivity has declined from 18.1 tons/ha to 15.6 tons/ha, a fall of 14%.

For the second year in a row, farmers in Maharashtra are facing record high costs to grow rabi onion seedlings. Heavy rains have damaged nurseries again, and both seed prices and nursery maintenance expenses have shot up due to bad weather.
As per the Central Spices Board, India exported 1.76 lakh tonnes of turmeric in the last financial year, worth 341 million US dollars.
Out of this, Maharashtra alone contributed 155 million dollars, which is 45% of the total export value.
