Maryland athletics is nearly back, and we’re excited to announce our beat writers for the fall and winter seasons!
Be sure to give all our reporters a follow and keep up with their coverage throughout the year.
Based on the graphic, it also looks like midfielder Leon Koehl will be back next season — massive boost for Maryland.
Koehl was drafted by Sporting KC after the 2024 season and I figured he’d turn pro after last year. Instead, it appears he’ll be back for his senior campaign.
Maryland men’s soccer announces its 16-game schedule for the 2026 season.
Non-conference highlights include the away season-opener at Pitt and a home match against Georgetown.
Terps travel to defending national champions Washington on Oct. 30th.
EJ Hankerson’s departure makes it 13 Maryland position players in the portal, and 21 guys overall.
At the moment, the Terps are retaining five position players from this year’s team — they’re the five position players who transferred in a year ago.
Current state of the Maryland roster.
Potential returners listed in the far left column. Highlighted the position players who would seemingly be opening day starters next year, too.
Terps had 20 new faces this past season, and that number is gonna be even higher in 2027.
Freshman outfielder Bud Coombs hits the portal as well.
Slashed .360/.491/.779 in 86 AB’s
This loss is similar to the Ty Kaunas departure in the sense that Coombs was seen as a core piece for the Terps to build around moving forward.
Andrew Koshy becomes the 17th MD player to hit the portal.
I posted a graphic earlier about what percentage of IP the Terps are losing.
With Koshy’s departure, that figure is now around 67%.
Sophomore reliever Ryan Bailey entered the portal as well. 6.82 ERA across 34.1 innings. 36 K’s to 16 BB’s
Terps now losing just over 56% of their IP from this past season.
In my final game story this season I wrote that Maryland baseball can see brighter prospects next year if the core stays together.
The core will not be staying together.
The pitching losses (specifically Cespedes and Hastings) feel more deflating to me.
Portal opens tmrw
Logan Hastings departs as well.
Keeping him and Cespedes was imperative to Maryland’s weekend rotation next year.
Every time its seems like the Terps have suffered their most frustrating departure, another key guy enters the portal.
What I’d consider the most surprising loss for the Dirty Terps thus far.
Ty Kaunas, who started in every game of his freshman season at shortstop and slashed .286/.410/.438, is entering the transfer portal.
The crucial losses keep stacking.
Maryland football will host Baylor in 2027 before traveling to face the Bears in 2028. The games replace ones against Virginia Tech, which the Terps won't face again until 2029 after this season, per @PeteThamel.
Maryland and Baylor haven't matched up since 1956.
Right-handed pitcher Jake Yeager is entering the transfer portal.
Yeager came to Maryland as a top-100 player in his class, but it never quite clicked for him with the Terps. His ERA rose by almost 2 points this past season while allowing 30 BB to 29 K’s.
UTL Michael Iannazzo enters the portal after three years with the Terps.
A contact-oriented hitter, Iannazzo hit .355 this past season, although he only saw 31 ABs.
Right-hander Cristofer Cespedes enters the portal — easily Maryland’s biggest pitching loss thus far.
Cespedes emerged as a frontline starter at the end of the season, delivering three quality starts in May.
Terps lose what likely would’ve been a weekend arm next year.
Paul Jones II also enters the portal, another significant loss for the Terps.
The left-handed hitting 1B/DH hit over .300 this past season and belted six homers over Maryland’s final five games.
