LHS AP Bio field trip part 2: we followed gull survey with fishing for striped bass. We set up at Valiant Reef, made a valiant attempt but came up short (just goldfish) . Not a single complaint from these awesome colonels though!
LHS AP Bio at S.Dumpling Island doing nest/egg/chick count. Bioethical position paper to follow- should the cormorants of island be managed? A little rain- we survived … and thrived!
LHS-Uconn Marine Science-Thames River trip measuring quantitative physical and water chemistry parameters. Each group also rotated through use of the ROV for qualitative observations. We then correlated the two. Big finds with ROV included shrimp, 2 kinds of crab and golf ball!
LHS -National Ocean Sciences Bowl-regional “Quahog Bowl” team takes 3rd place AND sportsmanship award! Ledyard won 4 of 5 matches in round robin and then lost a tough one in semifinals. So proud of your efforts and positivity! The B team cut their teeth today, get em next year!
The sea was angry that day my friends… LHS marine science had a tough day to seal 🦭 watch. Days of NW winds built some lively seas. We persevered and scored harbor seals at Hungry Pt. Great attitude and effort by these chilly Colonels.
LHS - Uconn marine science sport-fishing on the Aubrey Joy. Mid morning report …Target species is tautog but also have reeled in striped bass, Black Sea bass and porgy!
LHS - Uconn ECE marine science at Bushy Point Beach. Topography and plant cover on the docket. This study is in its 15th year, amazing changes since Superstorm Sandy wiped the beach out about 13 years this month.
LHS-UConn ECE marine science class earned 2nd place in their heat and then the right to compete in the finals of the cardboard boat race. Boats bunched up big time at starting line- Ledyard pushed free to take 2nd place 🥈 on the whole race! Wow!
Ledyard HS- Uconn ECE 🛶 boat race is Sept 19th at noon at Eastern Point Beach. In the spirit of the theme… 50 years of Jaws we are entering the “FIN-isher”. It is a dogfish 🦈 that will chew its way to the end! Updates and more photos on race day. Go Husky Colonels!
LHS AP Bio gulls part 2…. Students saw firsthand the loss of vegetation on the island due to cormorant guano. Areas with green largely had no cormorants! Also took time to filet the catch.
LHS AP Bio- gulls of south dumpling island and fishing trip. We flipped the script and fished 1st due to favorable tide. Six stripers over the rail- 3 keepers (28-31”). Two nice outsized fish at 36”&40”!
LHS- ECE marine science beach cleanup & Cookout. Large amount of floatable debris both small and large was collected- nice job all! Reward was some beach games, hot dogs and smores on grill. Thanks for a great year.
