New State Death Benefit For First Responders. Voters approved Prop 311, creating a death benefit fund for widows or children of first responders who are killed in a crime, giving them a lump-sum payment of $250,000 once a suspect is convicted.
New Rules To Limit Ticket Scalpers. Two bills dubbed the “Taylor Swift Act” are now the law. Both aim to crack down on ticket resellers and bots. This comes after Ticketmaster’s website crashed in 2022 when fans tried to buy tickets for her Eras tour. Bots can no longer buy tickets in bulk or use multiple emails and IP addresses to get around security measures to buy tickets over the public.
Stricter DUI Rules for Rideshare Drivers. One new law makes the DUI threshold stricter for rideshare drivers. Now, the legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.04 instead of 0.08, which reduces rideshare drivers’ restrictions by half compared to all other drivers on the road.
Property Tax Refund for Non-Enforcement of Public Nuisances. Prop 312, which passed in November, allows residents to apply for a tax refund if the town is not taking care of illegal camping, loitering, public consumption or other nuisances. If the city or town rejects the refund requests, they can take them to the county superior court.
