If you’re interested in tackling the problem of government inefficiency in all its forms like #corruption, incompetence, and costly political manoeuvres, then check out my post on the International Monetary Fund #PFM Blog. The post references a recent working paper by the #Anticorruption Research Centre (ARC) at Dublin City University, unveiled at the European Consortium for Political Research General Conference 2025. The paper showcases how combating corruption can create #Fiscal Space by providing deep insights into chronic #inefficiency problems.
The study, utilizing the US as a case study for a novel global model, reveals significant annual efficiency deficits totalling approximately $1.4 trillion, equivalent to 5.9% of GDP. These losses predominantly impact social protection and healthcare sectors. The research aims to test if these fiscal space frameworks can help policymakers perceive corruption as a form of inefficiency, thereby presenting anticorruption as a strategic budgetary opportunity.
