A donkey sanctuary in Devon has found an unusual way to protect its animals from painful insect bites, by dressing them in pyjamas.
Around 40 donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth now wear adapted pyjama bottoms, leggings and other loose fitting trousers to help cover their legs during fly season. Biting insects can cause irritation, sores and ongoing skin problems, so staff were looking for a practical solution.
After discovering that socks kept slipping off, the team found that larger clothing such as pyjamas and maternity trousers stayed in place much better while still allowing the donkeys to walk comfortably. The loose fabric also moves as the animals walk, making it harder for flies to settle.
Unlike sprays or creams that need frequent reapplying, the clothing provides protection throughout the day. The donkeys have adjusted well to their unusual outfits and appear comfortable wearing them.
The sanctuary is encouraging people to donate unwanted larger-sized clothing that can be adapted for the donkeys. Many of these garments might otherwise have been thrown away, giving them a useful second life while helping improve animal welfare.
It’s a simple, low-cost idea that keeps the donkeys more comfortable and reduces textile waste at the same time.

Berries are rich in antioxidants, including one that’s particularly good for your blood vessels: anthocyanin. It’s the compound that gives red and purple produce that deep-colored hue. Anthocyanin can help protect the walls of your arteries from damage and keep them from becoming stiff. Plus, anthocyanin spurs the release of nitric oxide, which helps to lower your blood pressure. https://t.co/uxWfaAtqjz
