I’m heartbroken to hear that we lost Peabo Bryson today.  His incredible voice and his kind spirit embodied the beauty of song and performance.  He was so wonderful and generous to me all those years ago, when we recorded Beauty and the Beast. He made me so comfortable, as I was just learning to sing in English.  He will remain for me always as a real symbol of the joy that music has brought to my life. His voice and his talent will be missed…

The Port Royal Experiment & 40 Acres & A Mule

The Port Royal Experiment (1862-1865) was a groundbreaking test case for Black self-sufficiency, land ownership, and economic independence before Special Field Order No. 15 (which promised 40 acres and a mule). It provided a model for Reconstruction, showcasing how formerly enslaved Black Americans could transition into landowners, skilled workers, and self-governing communities. However, like Special Field Order No. 15, the success of the Port Royal Experiment was ultimately undermined by white resistance and government betrayal.

During the Civil War (1861-1865), the Union Army seized the South Carolina Sea Islands (Port Royal, St. Helena, Hilton Head, and surrounding areas) after the Battle of Port Royal (November 1861).
White plantation owners fled, leaving over 10,000 enslaved Black people behind.
Instead of re-enslaving them, the Union Army, along with abolitionists, missionaries, and Northern investors, created a self-sufficiency experiment where the freedmen were allowed to farm, earn wages, and govern themselves.
This was one of the first large-scale tests of whether formerly enslaved people could become independent landowners and workers in a free society.

The Port Royal Experiment proved that freed Black Americans could successfully manage land and build self-sufficient communities.
Formerly enslaved Black people worked the abandoned plantations, growing crops like cotton and food for their survival.
In 1863, the government sold 20,000 acres of confiscated land to freedmen in plots of 20 to 40 acres for $1.25 per acre.
Many Black families became landowners, and this served as a precedent for Special Field Order No. 15, which later promised 40 acres and a mule to freedmen.
However, like SFO 15, the land was later taken away from many of the freedmen after the war ended, when President Andrew Johnson returned land to former Confederates.
