I’ve just watched Yvonne Okwara interview Antonio Guterres and honestly, that was a very professional interview.

A few things he said stood out:

International law only works when applied equally. Right now, many people see double standards globally. Russia is punished heavily, while other powerful countries often escape similar accountability.

Impunity continues because major powers put strategic interests first. That’s why some conflicts get global outrage while others get silence.

Africa deserves permanent UN Security Council seats. Africa cannot keep being affected by global decisions while lacking real power at the table. Libya should have been a lesson.

But the uncomfortable reality is this: I doubt current global powers truly want a stronger independent African voice.

My takeaway? Guterres sounds sincere, but the UN itself is limited by the interests of powerful nations.

The world increasingly feels like it is drifting back into a Cold War-style era where power matters more than principles.
