Today, I stand in solidarity with the global community in commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child, a momentous occasion dedicated to championing the fundamental rights, welfare, education, empowerment, and holistic development of every girl child across the world.

Every girl child deserves an equitable opportunity to dream audaciously, acquire quality education, cultivate her innate abilities, and actualise her fullest potential. She is not merely a promise of tomorrow; she is an indispensable stakeholder in the realities of today. Her voice deserves to be amplified, her aspirations deserve to be nurtured, and her potential deserves to be harnessed. Consequently, the creation of an enabling environment in which every girl can flourish, express herself without inhibition, and fulfil her God-given destiny must remain a collective moral obligation and societal imperative.

As a society, we must intensify our advocacy for equitable access to quality education, comprehensive healthcare, adequate protection against all forms of abuse, exploitation, and discrimination, as well as opportunities that empower girls to discover their talents, develop their capabilities, and contribute meaningfully to national development. No girl child should ever be deprived of her fundamental rights or denied the opportunity to excel on account of her gender, socioeconomic background, or circumstances of birth.

In this regard, governments, political leaders, community stakeholders, parents, educators, civil society organisations, and relevant institutions must demonstrate full commitment through the formulation, implementation, and sustenance of policies and initiatives that safeguard the rights of the girl child, dismantle discriminatory practices, promote inclusive and accessible education, and guarantee equal opportunities for all.

Furthermore, we must consciously nurture a generation of girls who are intellectually equipped, emotionally resilient, socially responsible, and sufficiently empowered to navigate challenges with courage and conviction.

Let us raise girls who possess an unshakeable belief in their abilities, understand the inviolability of their rights, and pursue their aspirations with determination, dignity, and self-confidence. Let us prepare them not merely to participate in leadership and nation-building, but to occupy their rightful positions as innovators, policymakers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and transformative agents of societal progress.

Equally important, we must cultivate communities that recognise the intrinsic worth of the girl child, uphold her dignity, respect her individuality, listen attentively to her perspectives, and provide the support necessary for her aspirations to blossom. Protecting the girl child is an affirmation of justice, equality, human dignity, and our shared responsibility for the future of humanity.

As we commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child 2026, let us renew and strengthen our collective resolve to build a society in which every girl is valued, every voice is heard, every right is protected, every dream is encouraged, and every opportunity for growth and advancement is made accessible. Let us move beyond symbolic celebrations and embrace sustained, deliberate, and purposeful action towards a future where no girl is left behind.

May we continue to champion the cause of every girl child and work assiduously towards a world where her gender is never a limitation to her greatness.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child 2026!

Just listen to this f00lish IGBO man without sense "I don't have a problem with a Chukwudi running Lagos" but you will have a problem with an Abiodun trying to run Anambra state.

I am deeply honoured to receive the VOW2026 Honourary Award at the 10th Voice of Women Conference & Awards.

Some recognitions celebrate what we have achieved. Others remind us of why we must continue. For me, this honour is both. To be recognised as a Champion and Ally of Nigerian Women is particularly meaningful because the advancement of women is a conversation to be had and it is a responsibility to be lived. It is about creating spaces where women are heard, opportunities where they can thrive, and systems where their contributions are valued not as an exception, but as a norm.

I believe that when a woman is empowered, the impact rarely ends with her. She strengthens a family, influences a community, shapes institutions and, ultimately, helps build a stronger society. This is why supporting women and girls is a development imperative.

I am therefore grateful my sister and founder Women Radio 91.7FM Mrs Toun Okewale Sonaiya and the Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation for this recognition and for ten years of using the power of the media to amplify voices, challenge limitations and turn conversations into impact.

I receive this award with humility, but also with renewed commitment to keep using whatever platform I have to open doors, amplify voices, advance opportunity and ensure that more women have a seat at the table where decisions about their lives and futures are made.

Thank you for this honour. I dedicate it to every woman and girl whose courage, resilience and ambition continue to move our society forward.

Most times I expect people to act like me or do things the way I do it forgetting that we are from different backgrounds.

I just expect Logic to be applied to things and not emotions.

[Kafilat Ogbara @KafilatOgbara]

In times of difficulty, leadership is measured by our willingness to stand with our communities and turn concern into meaningful action.

The recent flooding and demolition in parts of Kosofe has placed an additional burden on families and communities already navigating significant challenges. It was therefore important to engage the relevant authorities and support an immediate response for those affected.

On Monday, in collaboration with NEMA, relief materials were distributed to households across Agboyi-Ketu, Ikosi-Isheri and Kosofe. I appreciate NEMA for its response and everyone whose efforts contributed to making this intervention possible.

Relief is essential in moments of crisis, but our responsibility does not end there. We must continue to strengthen resilience, improve preparedness and advocate for sustainable solutions that protect communities in the long term.

These photographs capture more than a distribution exercise. They reflect the importance of partnership, compassion and responsive representation when our people need support.

Our communities remain at the centre of this work.
The commitment continues.

Imagine you are given one assignment:

“Design a new Nigeria”

There is only one condition: you will not know where you will stand in that Nigeria.

You could be born into wealth or hardship.
Into influence or obscurity.
In Lagos, Maiduguri, Aba, Makurdi, or a small community that rarely appears in national conversations.

Your family name, gender, background, abilities, and starting point would all be determined by chance.

The circumstances of our birth are beyond our control, but the society we create is within our responsibility.

Every institution we build, every policy we support, and every decision we make shapes the reality someone else will inherit.

So what principles should guide us?

Should we prioritize protecting those most vulnerable?

Should we build systems that reward talent, effort, and excellence?

Should we strive for equality of opportunity and dignity for all?

Or is there a balance we must discover?

This question echoes philosopher John Rawls' idea of the veil of ignorance;the thought experiment that asks us to imagine designing society without knowing our own position within it.

It challenges us to think beyond personal circumstances and consider the kind of nation we would want, regardless of where fate places us.

So I ask:

If you did not know who you would be in tomorrow’s Nigeria, what values would you insist we build the nation upon?
