Battle Ground High School sophomore Elise Bierer steps off the starting line at a district cross-country meet, refusing to compete against a transgender athlete who began the year competing against boys.

Bierer, one of her team’s fastest female runners, previously told her mother she would not race against a transgender athlete if faced with that situation.
