At the Open House on Seafarer Matters, the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) reaffirmed its commitment to placing the rights, dignity, safety, welfare and social security of Indian seafarers and their families at the heart of maritime governance.
Seafarers are entitled to fair employment terms, timely wages, safe working and living conditions, medical care, compensation, protection from abandonment, repatriation and welfare assistance in times of distress
This commitment is strengthened through the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund Society (SWFS), established in 1964 and delivering a holistic welfare ecosystem through 12 welfare schemes spanning family support, medical and insurance assistance, education and skill development, emergency financial assistance, retirement and old-age support, and community well-being.
From Survivor, Invalidity, Maternity and Death on Board benefits to critical illness support, insurance premium assistance, career progression, old-age benefits and enhanced assistance in warlike/high-risk areas, the welfare framework seeks to stand with seafarers and their families through different stages of life.
The welfare ecosystem extends beyond financial assistance through seafarers’ clubs and welfare centres across India, 24x7 welfare counselling and crisis response, and the Pranaam Seafarers Facilitation Counter at Mumbai T2 Airport
The Seamen’s Provident Fund Organisation (SPFO) further strengthens long-term financial security and social protection for seafarers and their families.
From the first voyage to post-retirement, the vision is clear: a stronger welfare ecosystem that protects, supports and stands with every Indian seafarer and their family.
