The supply chain that builds Canada's oil sands spans across the country. Between 2019 and 2023, oil sands producers spent $101.8 billion with Canadian suppliers, including $1.6 billion with Quebec businesses.

The partnership works both ways. Western Canada supplies ~65% of Quebec's crude oil, feeding two Quebec refineries in Lévis and Montréal that account for 20% of Canada's refining capacity and directly employ nearly 4,000 people.

Energy developed in one region creates contracts, payrolls and growth in another. That's the strength of an economy built together, and there's plenty more to build.

On October 28, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev delivered his State of the Nation Address. Its centrepiece is People’s Construction, a $14 billion nationwide programme to modernise hospitals, schools, roads, utilities and housing by 2029.

What it means for international partners:

🌏 A Eurasian logistics hub. The new Aral–Caspian corridor will cut about 1,000 km from the Trans-Caspian route between China and Europe and shorten delivery times by up to three days.

⚛️ Nuclear and energy. Kazakhstan, the world’s top uranium producer, plans to begin building its first nuclear power plant as early as 2027 and aims for an electricity surplus by 2029.

💎 Critical minerals. A new national strategy will open geological data and invite partnerships with developed countries to integrate Kazakhstan into global value chains.

⚖️ Investor protection. An Investment Court based on English common law will be set up in Alatau City.

🤖 AI and digital economy. The country is putting artificial intelligence to practical use, backed by new supercomputers and a fibre-optic link across the Caspian seabed.

With GDP approaching $400 billion, Kazakhstan is building the infrastructure for its next stage of growth. Canadian businesses have new opportunities to partner in energy, mining, technology and logistics 🇰🇿🤝🇨🇦
