Are social media harming democratic societies? Are we online only surrounded by those who share our beliefs? Is technology narrowing our political horizon?
Our research group deals with these questions – and we are happy to discuss them with you! #filterbubbles#echochambers
In (3), findings revealed a significant influence on the opinion climate by #opinionleaders (OLs). While discrediting OLs can dominate the opinion climate and turn their stance into a majority opinion, ambivalent OLs can contribute to greater balance in the opinion climate.
#ica2021 We contributed on (1) the impact of the exposure to congruent opinions and political social identities on political polarization, (2) the role of #populism and #ConspiracyTheories in online network homogenization, and (3) the investigation of #opinionleaders with an ABM.
In (2), it turned out that higher levels in populist attitudes are linked to lower levels of perceived online network homogeneity. This unexpected finding was complemented by the, also unexpected, result that the belief in conspiracies is unrelated to perceived homogeneity.

In (1), we found that the exposure to congruent and incongruent opinions has, if any, very limited effects on extremity of attitudes, political polarization, and selective exposure. This appears to be even the case, when political identities are salient.
