I look on it more positively. IRFU are still picking up the test portion cost of the national squad players salaries even though everyone else think they're in Leinster's 16 million euro senior team playing budget. In fact, even though we lost 9 senior players last season, I think we'd get away with saying the budget has now increased to €18m and watch everyone gnash their eyes and weep bitter teeth at the unfairness of it all.

The IRFU Covid government grants were the same as the WG grants.
WG paid in Mar 2021 £13,529,500 - £2.7m to each region plus WRU.
IRFU secured €18m/£15.4m of which €4m/£3.4m had to go to community clubs.
The €14m/£12m balance was used to part-pay the provinces player recharge debts of €27m along with €13m of CVC monies from PRO14 investment.

The separate Welsh Government £18 loan was paid back by WRU in Jan 2026, through a refinanced loan at lower rate as part of wider refinancing package.

A good few money figures have been bandied about for future funding for Welsh teams under WRU 3-team model or the COW 4-team model. WRU has provided more detail on investment in pathways whereas the COW Plan simply talks about an illustrative envelope of £110m over 5 years for the regions. Neither group has indicated what happens with Competition Income - is it included in their figures or is it extra funding on top? Various commentators have made comparisons with IRFU funding for Irish teams - €41m annually. Here's how things compare so far.

£22m a year plus another £7m in comp income for just senior team only with WRU planning to fund academy and pathway separately. £29m/£7.2m per team would be a good funding outcome compared to many other teams.

@FredDJournalism I’m aware that it’s the alternative plan. Did they say that it would include CI? If they’re not going to invest in academy/pathway separately then what’s the point of this alternative? Jeez.
