Authoritarianism is undermining #climate action – and time is running out as warming accelerates and tipping points draw near. But as globalisation fades, national governments must assert their role in leading a climate emergency response:

Trigger warning/warming: “A major El Niño is under way, forecast to peak near +4.0 °C in Nov 2026” and “This year is on track for 1.63°C ±0.05°C above preindustrial.” https://t.co/xMPd8hubRW #Climate
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
Ominous news. Permafrost melting has accelerated since the turn of the century, a big study of 156 sites worldwide has shown. 90% of high mountain regions are affected. Rising temperatures are blamed and runaway climate change could ensue.

24% of the global population, or 2 billion people, will experience a month of heat that exceeds human tolerance under 3°C of warming https://t.co/2jU3fiYYEO
The El Nino is off the charts. Can people see the real issue and accept the implications? We may be getting closer. See the Bigger Problem – https://t.co/rsyLt8z4XS

Pearls&Irritations today: The coming super El Niño will intensify heat, drought, fire and crop losses across Australia and Asia, while fertiliser shortages raise the risk of a wider food crisis.

July 2026 was nominally the 2nd warmest July on record, with a global average of 1.56 ± 0.09 °C (2.80 ± 0.15 °F) above the 1850–1900 average — the first month of 2026 to exceed 1.5 °C — behind only July 2023 and effectively tied with July 2024. https://t.co/yDHph3eGOw
With all August model runs now in (except for SINTEX-F), we now expect this year's El Niño event to peak sometime between October and December at a stunning 4C in the Niño3.4 region.

Breaking: El Niño strength forecasts have just taken another step higher.
The new ECMWF outlook shows the event peaking near +4.0˚C in December — obliterating the previous record.
This will have sweeping implications on global climate patterns from late this year into 2027.
@CarbonBrief@hausfath Isn’t that what James Hansen was saying months ago? Once again, a great scientist who some in the current research community want to diss, will be right once more!
Marvelous examination of how to spot 2026-era AI writing, via the Economist
- AI likes long sentences with less punctuation; “and” is its most overused word
- relatedly, lists of three things, which drives up use of "and" as well
- polysyllabic adjectives: “significant”, “increasingly”
- scientific jargon ("rate-limiting," “parameter”)
- nominalizations (making nouns from verbs: eg, “expansion” from “expand”)
- ofc, everyone's favorite: "it's not X, it's Y"
Climate change made the huge Spanish wildfires at least 20 times more likely, scientists conclude. Just the latest study to have linked heatwaves and wildfires to global heating. Causes of ignition vary, but the underlying conditions are crucial.

@ProfStrachan In the long run each one degree Celsius results in 10-20 metres of sea level rise. Cooling back to Holocene conditions is only path to protecting coastlines.
2/2 “Whatever short-term income fossil fuel exports generate is overwhelmed by the deaths, destruction & decline in human security caused by accelerating climate disruption, costs that will continue accumulating for decades and be borne by communities and future generations.”
Strong stand by Adm. Chris Barrie in keynote address to the Clean Energy Summit in Sydney today. “Disordered and delusionary thinking” as ex-ADF chief calls out Australian Government’s climate hypocrisy. https://t.co/nasmgamIG7 1/2
