This class has really been a treat. I was very pleasantly surprised with the different directions of comic books we read and how interesting the stories were. The diversity was really fun to explore in each book. #ENGL157
American Born Chinese was a really great story to read and I feel like it was a great closer for this class. I really enjoyed how different and original it was in it’s art and story telling. #ENGL157
Having finished Kings in Disguise I really enjoyed the whole ride. I found Freddie leaving Sam with Elizabeth and riding on his own to be bittersweet and I hope in the story Freddie finds his way out there somewhere. #ENGL157
I really appreciate how Kings in Disguise approaches the Great Depression. It feels like a real and grounded approach to a setting in history that rarely get touched upon in modern media and stories. But after reading the story it really seems rich with possibilities. #ENGL157
I’ve been enjoying Sam and Fred’s relationship in Kings in Disguise. As insane and unpredictable as it may be there are times where it’s nice that Fred has someone looking after him like Al did. #ENGL157
Fun house has so much in it to unpack. The story is told in a way where it drips just a little by little. And the art has a lot of depth and meaning behind it. This was quite the interesting read, kind of reminiscent of Stuck Rubber Baby and Persepolis. #ENGL157
Persepolis was another great read. I loved every page of it. Having not known too much about the Iranian revolution it was very interesting hearing it told through a young Marji’s point of view. #ENGL157
I think it’s funny when Maus gets meta and has Art reference his comics. I particularly enjoyed this panel when he tells Francois that in real life she’d never let him talk this long without interrupting. #ENGL157
I can see where Art’s dad was coming from a little in getting rid of his Mother’s journals. But for the most part it’s such a waste to burn it all especially with it intended for Art. I can’t even imagine the hurt Art has knowing it’s never to be recovered. #ENGL157
Maus is probably my favorite book we’ve read so far in class. I really love the art style, the story, and the characters. There’s so much to it. It’s interesting to analyze the dynamics and intentions behind deciding the races’ animal roles such as rats, cats, pigs, etc. #ENGL157
I’m really excited to go into Maus. I’ve heard there was some recent controversy over it in some schools oddly enough. But the art looks really good and I’m excited to see what kind of story it tells in regards to the holocaust. #ENGL157
Initially I have to admit I did not like Toland in Stuck Rubber Baby. However as the story progressed I enjoyed seeing his character change and grow up. The ending was kind of bittersweet but I’m glad he ended up finding somebody. #ENGL157
After going through the first half of Stuck Rubber Baby it’ll be interesting to see the developments of the next half. Excited to start it again today. #ENGL157
Stuck Rubber Baby was very interesting in how some of the attitudes during the civil rights movement in the book are still prevalent in today’s racial discourse. Crazy how some books just continue to be relevant. #ENGL157
I really found it fascinating learning about all the history that ties into Bitter Root’s story. It was even more impressive afterwards seeing how well it was brought into the story. #ENGL157
The one thing that really sticks out to me while reading Bitter Root is the art style. It’s such a fun read and the art just makes it more enjoyable. #ENGL157
Relating Ms. Marvel to Supreme for the discussion this week was interesting but surprisingly I had a lot to write about in my connections. Unlikely pairing lol. #ENGL157
Thought it was interesting reading that Ethan Crane’s comic he wrote was Omniman. I wonder if there’s any history with the character from Invincible since that’s an Image story as well. #ENGL157
I thought what we learned last lecture was pretty familiar, then I remembered that when I was younger my dad got me this book. I dug it up and might’ve found a pretty helpful study tool lol. #ENGL157
