Key learnings include: a women’s immigration status is not dependent on staying in their relationship, yet threats of deportation are common; the stigma of leaving an abuser can cause women to stay; and the pandemic created further barriers to providing and receiving help.
Today, YWCA Canada was joined by Dinoba Kirupa for our Violence Against Women Staff Network. As Project Manager of a national study on Gender-Based Violence with @CASSAOnline , Dinoba shared insight into the experiences of survivors in South Asian communities in Canada.
"Given the long painful history of Canadian healthcare, many racialized communities lack confidence in the COVID vaccine. Very important to break vaccine hesitancy tailored to the concerns of each community."

Dear #ICC States Parties, as expressed to you ad nauseam for over a year, legal professionals have serious harassment claims against prosecutor candidates. I asked women how the lack of a reporting mechanism impacts them and will publish their brave & moving words next week.
In 2019 we asked 500+ survivors what #sexualviolence is. We then launched The Hague Principles to promote a better understanding of the different forms of sexual violence. https://t.co/TKX2hVpPQO
How to best define acts of a sexual nature?
Read @WayneJordash's guest post on the circulation of the @IntlCrimCourt's sexual violence definition and the research conducted by @GRC_HumanRights on best practices to define acts of #sexualviolence.

"I am encouraged by the positive steps taken by the #SouthSudan People’s Defence Forces in bringing to justice perpetrators of #sexualviolence before the District Courts Martial in the town of Yei" - Pramila Patten, Special Rep of the SG @endrapeinwar https://t.co/AaBCvGfplI
Today we discussed #sexual and #gender-based crime (#SGBV) in the context of the ICC, learning from national experience and the work in the office of the prosecutor #FatouBensouda. So much work still to be done. But so much inspiration on what can be done. @4GenderJustice
The inordinate amount of smiling a woman is forced to do in order to not be seen as rude or a b*tch was blatant last night. This was not the Harris we saw at Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing. #WomenInPolitics#Harris#Clinton
US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a pioneer in our field, a figure to turn to for strength and motivation to be ambitious and unrelenting in the fight for gender justice. She led the way and will continue to be an inspiration.
How to improve current definitions of #sexualviolence?
Out now! Read the Project Report 'Unraveling Definitions of Sexual Violence Through a Survivor Centered Approach', developed by @ubcMPPGA and @erinbaines on the @WIGJ Call it what it is campaign: https://t.co/mD09CurjTQ
This is why we need new "The Hague Principles on Sexual Violence" @4GenderJustice which includes:
👉ICL Guidelines: A tool for intl criminal law practitioners explaining when acts of sexual violence in the Civil Society Declaration amount to intl crimes

Check out a new article on The Pub! Today @DKirupa discusses the issue of climate migrants not being addressed in the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, and its potential impacts as the effects of climate change worsens across the world. https://t.co/ZS3iSTPLiE
Using the power of the law to advance the human rights of women and girls, @womenslink has successfully defended a victim of forced abortion by FARC in Colombia. The ruling has granted the woman access to health services as a victim of the conflict in Colombia. More:
The UN Commission on the Status of Women's 64th session #CSW64 is all but cancelled, including 550+ side-events. Activism and advocacy will continue throughout 2020 - suggestions include postponing CSW and/or have dialogues/events in the margins of other high-level UN meetings.
#RomeStatute requires #ICC Prosecutor to be of 'high moral character'. CSOs have urged the Committee on the Election of the Prosecutor to clearly+comprehensively+publicly define the phrase+a vetting process that excludes candidates that commit condone or ignore sexual harassment.
