Delighted to see Dr Alemu’s success in examination of an important new contribution to research on animals in Catholic Social Teaching: ‘The Cries of the Animals: Integral Ecology After
Laudato Si’’. Congratulations!
Dr Alemu (pending corrections) - thanks to Brian Brock and @kevinhargaden today for an insightful conversation, as always to my fantastic supervisor @DLClough, and to the support today from Nathaniel Greene and Odin, @codycrawshaw and @drkatiecross. Happy pre-birthday to me!
Great piece by @KatieBEdwards on Kyrgios and his off-screen milking of his ‘beloved troublemaker’ brand:

I'm glad to be in the good company of the very many organisations and individuals calling on the incoming government to overhaul our broken asylum system in this open letter.
Today we join 300 organisations and 500+ individuals in calling on @10DowningStreet to fundamentally overhaul our broken asylum system.
We need a new approach: one that protects people seeking safety, rather than punishing them for political gain:

Today's Twitter Poll: Do you think the first past the post (FPTP) system has worked well, or should we move closer to a form of proportional representation (PR)?
Rough glossary:
First Past The Post: Current system where each constituency elects person who got most votes, all other votes are then mostly irrelevant.
Proportional Representation: All votes count as (through various different mechanisms) number of seats is made to more closely matches the percentage of the national vote.

@womeninchurch The ethics of how non-human companion animals treat their human companions is presumably a possible research focus within the PhD position!
Great opportunity for someone: PhD position at the Copenhagen Faculty of Theology, “Theology and ethics of domesticated animals” https://t.co/tizZkN6guT
🚨BREAKING🚨
@BrewDog have *sacked* one of our members for challenging senior management for allowing the EDL - a known fascist organisation - to meet in their workplace, the biggest pub in London
We will be doing everything we can legally & industrially to support this member
Dear @Keir_Starmer and @UKLabour, 2834 horses have been raced to death since 2007 (https://t.co/0yChMiRJvP). Four died at Newton Abbot just yesterday. The gambling industry pays the bills. Could we agree that it would be good to avoid betting on politics AND animal cruelty?
Four race horses perished at Newton Abbot Racecourse today - 25 June - racing’s darkest day in 17 years.
Hallowed Rose suffered a broken neck; Bala Brook and Cuzzicombe were injured then destroyed; & 3yo Happy Helen collapsed dead after being brutally whipped. #BanJumpRacing
It’s great to see the growing evidence that a @DefaultVeg policy can make a big impact. If you’re part of an organization that serves food, contact @GreenerDefault or @BetterFoodFdn for advice about implementing the policy https://t.co/5J1FHX2yhQ
Dear @guardian_sport, please can you explain your support for racing horses to death by covering it as a sport? You don’t cover bear baiting or dog fighting as sports, because we’ve recognised it’s wrong to gamble on animal cruelty. Time to stop supporting this blood sport, too.

VICTORY! BBC Radio 4 scrap their daily horse racing tips & will now only give tips at the 'big events'. This is a fantastic step: the fairytale illusion the horse racing industry has tried to uphold for so many years is crumbling & society's attitudes are changing. #YouBetTheyDie
With 10 days left until the election, it's very exciting to see @TheGreenParty membership numbers rising and rising every day!

@talkChristianly@womeninchurch@BBCr4today Thanks for your complaints! The intersection between concern for the social evils of gambling and cruelty towards animals is an interesting one: both concerns have longstanding roots in the campaigning work of British evangelicals over the past couple of centuries.
Dear @BBCr4today, please can you explain why you provide tips for gambling on events that kill horses? 2241 horses have died racing since 2007. You don’t encourage gambling on any other sport. Isn’t it past time to recognize that this feature should be put out to pasture?
@womeninchurch@BBCr4today I’ve emailed @guardianopinion this morning with a pitch for an opinion piece. If that doesn’t get picked up, what do you think would be the best next step? A series of letters to newspaper editors?
