Hey Jonathan, Good question. Bill certainly does not try to hit Scotty in the face with the ball purposely, he is trying to throw it directly into Scotty's glove to give the kid a modicum of confidence to help him. But it goes bad. Although I suppose Bill may seem like a villain, but he is not. The only true villains in the story are the Little Leaguers. Mr. Mertle and The Beast seem at first to be "villains" they're not, they're false bad guys, obviously, because they end up as good guys. But really, in an over-arching way, the true Villain of the story is the collective imagination of the Sandlot Boys. And when Benny jumps over Mertle's fence? That's his first step into adulthood, where he leaves those parts of his childhood behind - in order to help his friend. At least that's what I intended. Hope that helps. Cheers - DME!
