🧵Now that day has broken, and we're getting better evidence, I'm willing to share some PRELIMINARY thoughts on the al-Ahli hospital explosion. The photos of the scene are, to me, not consistent with an airstrike and are not consistent with claims that 500+ people were killed.
Entering the political arena is always a net negative on twitter (amplifying rage and the machine that feeds off it, h/t @liv_boeree ) but on days like today I find it equally as heinous to be a bystander.
Modern anti-Israel sentiment has the hallmarks of an eerily en-vogue rebranding of anti-semitism, and as such is potentially more insidious. The knee-jerk reaction to assume that isn't true should be thoughtfully questioned. Everyone believes their own version of hate is justified. Their racism isn't racism, their xenophobia isn't xenophobia, because it's theirs, and it feels right to them.
Today I had calls with friends and family in Israel, scared for their lives and their children's lives. No one is happy about any of the violence that will occur because of this, or any that has ever occurred before towards Gaza, even towards Hamas. No one celebrates Palestinian suffering. They, like most people, care about the day to day quality of life for them and their children, and they are all terrified.
On one of these calls, a friend showed me one of the worst things I've ever seen--the video below of a three-year old child kidnapped by Hamas (after his mother was killed in front of him). Taken to Gaza, older children torture him to speak Hebrew so they can laugh. He's just one of many innocents in this unprecedented attack on civilians.

There is, too, endless suffering that the Palestinians have borne since Israel's creation. That creation is fraught with atrocities, the same sort that colonial confections across the world were born out of (although none but Israel is expected to cease existing). Israel is not innocent in this conflict.
The present-day difference, however, is vast. While civilian lives are often, and sadly, lost at the hands of Israel's retaliation, the attitude in Israel isn't one of celebration. Advanced evacuation warnings are given before Hamas infrastructure is bombed. Teens at parties aren't targeted for slaughter. Kids aren't kidnapped. Mothers aren't killed while their children watch for sport. Extremists absolutely exist, but they and Israeli soldiers that commit those crimes are tried and in prison, often for even firing a single additional shot in a conflict.
Despite their leaders receiving many billions in aid each year, Palestinians in Gaza live in poverty and strife, deliberately kept in such circumstances by Hamas in order to keep a crucial thing needed for peace--economic prosperity--away from their own people to serve the militant cause.
If you are passionate about the Palestinian plight, you have endless reasons to feel that way. But if you find yourself supporting children being slaughtered in act of terror, consider that you are seeing the world through the lens of tribalism rather than humanity.

@JasonIsbell Congratulations Jason! Rolling up on 37 in April. Love that your work captures emotions and feelings pre and post recovery better than anyone and often articulates what I can't find the words to express.
@MaddieBStewart Glad to hear. It's day 13,415 for me, not all of them easy! Happy to share if ever wanted. But I particularly want to support any follower of @DevinCow
