How Rome’s Favourite Myth Falls Flat—Even Against Rome

One of the most recycled accusations from Roman Catholic apologists is that Protestantism has "30,000," or "40,000," or even "500,000" denominations—each version sounding more dramatic than the last. The intention is clear: paint Protestantism as a chaotic mess, and exalt Rome as the only beacon of unity.

But here’s the truth…

Where Did That Number Come From?

The claim originates from the World Christian Encyclopedia (David Barrett, 1982 and later 2001 editions), a massive sociological reference that counts organizations, not denominations in the doctrinal sense. It defines “denomination” so broadly that it includes:

Cultural branches of the same denomination (e.g., Baptist churches in USA, Ghana, and Brazil each counted separately)

Independent church networks

Cults and heretical groups like:

Jehovah’s Witnesses

Mormons (LDS)

Oneness Pentecostals

Universalists

Even New Thought metaphysical churches

None of these represent historic, biblical Protestantism. Yet Rome throws them in to inflate the number—and then points back and mocks.

Let’s Apply That Same Standard to Rome

If we’re honest and apply Barrett’s logic to Roman Catholicism, the number isn’t “1 denomination” either.

Here's the breakdown:

23 Eastern Catholic Churches (each with separate canons, liturgies, disciplines)

Dozens of religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans, Benedictines—each with distinct theological emphases and practices)

Hundreds of independent national churches claiming Catholic identity but not in communion with Rome (e.g., Old Catholics, Chinese Patriotic Catholic Church, Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church)

Massive doctrinal divergence at the parish level—German bishops endorsing same-sex blessings while African bishops denounce it

Radical theological pluralism inside the walls—liberation theology, folk religion, Marian excesses, universalist tendencies, and traditionalist schisms

Using Barrett’s same logic, Rome could easily be sliced into over 240 denominations, and even more if you factor in independent “Catholic” bodies globally. The World Christian Encyclopedia (2nd ed., 2001) itself lists 242 Roman Catholic "denominations" worldwide.

Let that sink in: even the source Rome uses against Protestants divides Catholicism into 240+ internal groups.

So much for unity.

The Real Issue Is Not Numbers—It's Authority

Jesus didn’t say, “They will know you are mine by your centralized organization.” He said, “By this all people will know you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John ), and that unity is grounded in truth (John ).

Rome points to numbers while denying sola Scriptura, distorting justification, and redefining grace. Meanwhile, faithful Protestants—though scattered in visible bodies—stand united on:

The authority of Scripture alone

The gospel of grace alone through faith alone

Christ alone as Mediator

The glory of God alone

This is not confusion. This is the priesthood of all believers, expressing the gospel in every tribe and tongue.

Rome’s Accusation is a Mirror

Rome’s “30,000 denominations” claim is not only dishonest—it’s hypocrisy wearing a mitre.

When applied to themselves, the illusion of unity collapses into a fragmented empire of conflicting voices, internal scandals, doctrinal compromise, and national disobedience. The real dividing line is not how many denominations exist. It’s who holds authority—God’s Word, or man’s traditions.

Protestants do not stand on chaos. We stand on the Rock.

Let Rome count denominations. We will count the cost—and still preach the truth.
