Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Acting Director Russell Vought accidentally said the quiet part out loud:

“I work for President Trump, not the American people.”

That mindset is clearly evident in how the agency has gutted consumer protections in favor of industry and Trump donors.

Since Trump took office, the CFPB has:

• Overturned the overdraft fee cap — The Biden-era rule (which aimed to save consumers ~$5 billion per year with options like a $5 cap for large banks) was repealed by Congress via the Congressional Review Act in 2025. The CFPB is now barred from issuing substantially similar rules.

• Rolled back price transparency and junk fee protections — This includes credit card late fees (the prior $8 cap proposal was blocked/vacated in 2025). The CFPB has since issued an RFI in July 2026 but has largely stepped back from aggressive action.

• Dismissed or withdrew from 19–20 public enforcement actions.

• Dramatically reduced new settlements and relief — Critics estimate this shift (plus dropped cases) has cost American consumers $19 billion in potential relief in the first year alone.

• Closed 76% of supervisory actions (~1,500) and significantly scaled back examinations.

• Pursued broad deregulation — Withdrew over a dozen final or proposed rules and nearly 70 guidance documents. Prioritized rescinding or reconsidering prior rules (e.g., Small Business Lending Data Collection under Section 1071).

• Saw complaint volume surge to 6.6 million in 2025 (doubling prior years, largely driven by credit reporting issues), while consumer resolution/relief rates dropped sharply.

This would be a huge scandal for any other president.

A South Korean company challenging Commerce Department trade penalties paid Donald Trump’s holding company $2,000,000 last year.

The payment came from Base Group, the lead investor in Korea Aluminium, which faced penalties after the Commerce Department found that South Korean companies were circumventing trade duties on Chinese-made aluminum. The money surfaced in Trump’s annual financial disclosure released in late June.

The disclosure described it only as a nonrefundable development fee tied to a letter of intent. The Trump Organization says it relates to an unannounced golf course project.

Base Group has courted the Trump family for nearly a decade. It sells Trump-branded wine in South Korea and hosted Eric Trump at its Seoul headquarters in February, where executives discussed expanding trade between the two countries.

As recently as last month, the Commerce Department was weighing whether to raise tariffs further on Korea Aluminium. A preliminary review released last week sided with American aluminum companies. The agency that decides this company’s fate answers to the president. The president took $2,000,000 dollars from its largest investor.

This is one payment. Trump’s holding company collected at least $125,000,000 from foreign sources last year, from more than a dozen countries.

Every president in modern history stepped away from their business to avoid even the appearance of a conflict. This president kept nearly 30 ventures with foreign partners and now profits from companies whose fortunes his own government controls.

This cannot be normalized.

NEW: A second ex-wife of David Brouillette, the ICE agent who killed Joan Durán Guerrero in Maine, Lucinda Brouillette, issued a statement this morning. In it she says "If you were to ask me whether I believe David Brouillette is capable of this level of extreme violence, my answer is unequivocally yes."

"Throughout the years, I brought my concerns to law enforcement, the courts, and the Department of Health and Human Services. I tried to explain what I believed was a long-standing pattern of abuse, intimidation, manipulation, and controlling behavior because I genuinely feared where those behaviors could lead. From my perspective, those warnings did not receive the attention I believed they deserved."
