Finally made a start on one of our uncatalogued rooms at @DNHC_ archive & found this lovely artefact hidden away. Bookend or just a commemorative display? Either way, it's from the teak of HMS Iron Duke, Admiral Jellicoe's flagship from the Battle of Jutland, 1916. #museum
Admiralty Manual of Seamanship: Vol. 1, from 1915. Original owner was Sub Lieutenant J.A. Leckie of HMS Hermione, an Astraea class cruiser launched at Devonport in 1893 that served in the Great War as guard ship at Southampton. Price one shilling and sixpence.
#OTD in 1959 HMS #Plymouth was launched from @HMNBDevonport_ by Viscountess Nancy Astor. She was one of the first ships in the Falklands war. Despite being attacked by 5 aircraft she survived and rejoined the task force, playing a key role in retaking South Georgia Island
#OnThisDay 1588 the Spanish Armada was spotted off #Plymouth The English Fleet under Lord Howard and Sir Francis Drake, sailed from #Plymouth and engaged the Armada the next day starting an epic chase/battle that led to a decisive victory for the English Navy. @PlymouthHistor1
