Lockheed Martin has landed up to $1.2 billion to build a new Precision Strike Missile with a seeker that can track moving ships, and it fires from the same HIMARS launchers the Army already uses across the force.
It passed its second sea-strike test in August, and Lockheed says it's expanding capacity to quadruple production.
HIMARS can be flown in on a C-130 and set up on islands near key shipping chokepoints in the Indo-Pacific, putting ships within range at risk from the shoreline.
The Army is already speeding up a later version built to hit moving ships from 1,000 km or more away.
Navies used to worry about submarines and jets, and now they have to watch the shoreline too.
