For optimum performance, a man must know himself. So must a nation. A society that doesn't know itself imports its standards, its ambitions and its insecurities.

Modernize. Trade with the world. Learn from everyone. But do not lose yourself.

Goodluck Jonathan lost the election in 2015. He is not an Igbo man. He is Ijaw from the South-South. What happened? His people simply moved on. He made peace with Buhari and worked closely with him.

What did many Igbos do? We attacked Buhari and his Fulani heritage for eight years. We hated everything Fulani because of Nnamdi Kanu's constant brainwashing. I remember when some people would circulate WhatsApp voice messages saying, 'Avoid anything coming from the North; it has been poisoned by Fulani.'

Many of our people did all these things out of hatred for Buhari. It is a fact that Buhari did more for the Southeast in eight years than the PDP did in 16 years.

The same card we played during the eight years of Buhari, we continued with Tinubu. Nothing stops you from hating the president and his policies, but attacking his tribe is where I draw the line. After all, we have Yorubas who voted for your candidate in the last election, and likewise, Igbos who voted for Tinubu.

Within the space of 12 years, we have burned bridges between the two most influential political regions in the country. Are we banking on votes from the South-South or North-Central to make an Igbo man president? If yes, wake up; it will not happen.

The South-South and North-Central (Middle Belt) are regions whose votes you cannot predict. They give their votes depending on their interests at that point in time.

We have lost the goodwill of the Muslim North during the eight years of Buhari. Even the few votes Obi got from the Southwest, he has lost due to the behavioral patterns of his followers. The votes from the North-Central have been balkanized by President Tinubu, as have those of the South-South.

The truth remains: Obi has no path close to even Aguda House.

One man's ideology became an entire nation's indictment. That's the real cost of weak institutions not that a country produces an extremist, but that the world stops distinguishing between the extremist and the 30 million people who share his passport, his religion, or his accent.

A government that can't clearly prosecute, disown, and account for its own threats in public in courts, in declassified records, in transparent process hands the narrative to whoever tells the simplest story. Saudi Arabia disowned bin Laden years before the West did, and it still took two decades and partial declassification to get even that much on record. Vague accountability doesn't just fail justice. It fails the population that gets stereotyped in the silence.

If a government keeps the truth hidden for 15 years before anyone's allowed to see it who actually gets hurt by that wait?

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, better known as Olu Jacobs, was a National Icon and a source of pride for Nigeria, whose pioneering role as an international thespian inspired many of our countrymen and women and drew many of today's stars into television and movie acting.

As children, we watched in awe as one of us starred in multiple British sitcoms and several global blockbuster movies, after his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which first led him into theatre and from the stage to the silver screen, including a stint in the runaway British TV hit series, The Professionals, amongst many others. He had no contemporaries amongst his fellow citizens in this regard—absolutely none!

Along with his mentor, the late great Chief Hubert Ogunde, he was the real Grand Old Man of Nollywood, having become a global star as far back as the seventies and early eighties, with such movie credits as the Dogs of War, in which he started with the respected Christopher Walken (pictured), himself once a Bond Villain, as well as featuring in a Roman Polanski film, Pirates.

He also gladdened the hearts of many fans through his many commercials and adverts, which are now classics and bring up fond nostalgia.

Because of the modesty of Ogunde and Jacobs, and especially Mr Jacobs, who starred in hundreds of Nollywood movies, less deserving individuals have made pretences to their title of Nollywood Pioneers, but history makes their claims hollow.

We will miss this great African who has passed into ancestor-hood at the great age of 84. We pray that God Almighty grant the family he left behind succour, especially Auntie Joke Sylvia, his wife and fellow actor, and their children.

A grateful nation will miss Mr Jacobs, who, thankfully, got the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) title in his lifetime.

Adieu, great sir. Until we meet to part no more.
